I continue working with many individuals in distress, but due to folks learning about my success with couples, more and more couples desperate for help in their marriages seek me out.
For many years I worked almost exclusively with individuals, helping them overcome depression, anxiety and other issues and maladies that were ruining their lives. Then, about 25 years ago, after hearing so many horror stories from couples about their previous couples therapy experiences, I decided to specialize in working with couples and completed advanced couples therapy training. I help couples heal and rebuild their relationship, creating the intimate, loving and happy relationship that they have been yearning for but could not previously achieve, the relationship in which both partners feel safe, respected and fully loved.

Moreover, my specialized training in psychopharmacology makes me a key healthcare provider for individuals in need of appropriate medication management with their prescribing physician.
After 35 years in the San Diego area, I feel particularly well suited to working with clients with a variety of "problems in living." Managing stress, lifestyle balance, coping with relationship issues, and workplace difficulties affect us all, and having professional support and input is now not only acceptable, but crucial. And, research has shown that of all the factors that are key in predicting a positive outcome in any form of therapy, the quality of the relationship with your therapist is the most important. And that is my focus!

If you are tired of the man you have become and would like help making positive changes, please contact me for a free consultation.
Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Many therapists claim to offer CBT but have had little training in this approach.
We realize the importance of developing a supportive therapy relationship based in trust, mutual respect, and clear understanding of your unique background, values, and needs. At the Cognitive Therapy Institute, we work with you to identify goals and to develop a plan for reaching your goals in a sensible and effective way. Often our clients experience increased confidence and success in a relatively short time, largely because we offer clear guidance and techniques using the latest Cognitive Behavioral Treatments. You learn skills and strategies to resolve current difficulties and to enjoy a good quality of life in the years ahead.

One of the most important things for parents of pre-teens to remember, is that the biggest motivation for your child's behaviors is attention from you. Your child will try all sorts of things to get and keep your attention, and those behaviors that work will increase while those behaviors that don't will typically go away. Children love and thrive on praise from their parents, but in many cases, those behaviors that yield negative attention from you (such as yelling or punishing) will often reinforce those unappreciated behaviors, as well.

Are you looking for insight with something in your life that you are not satisfied with?Maybe I can help. I have worked with many different issues in the 20 years that I have been in practice. I hold a great deal of respect for those who are open to working on whatever problems bring them in. Whether it's depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts, understanding yourself better, repetitive destructive patterns or addictions, I believe a supportive and empathic approach is crucial. I also believe that understanding what led us to our struggles is helpful in making the changes we want.

My name is Dr. Kamran Zafar and I am the founder and CEO of La Jolla Healing Center. I have been in recovery for more than 30 years and know how lonely it can get. Addiction can hit a person when they least expect it: when they're trying to manage an increase in their workload, fulfill obligations with family, or for no reason whatsoever. It often begins innocently — sometimes to relieve the stress of everyday life, or even just to experience the thrill of something new. Before the person knows it, they’re using alcohol or substances to cope with the negative feelings and stress in their daily lives.

I use hu manistic and strengths-based approaches to treatment to discuss issues and concerns before introducing you to widely trusted evidence-based treatments to address them.
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA where I attended the nearby La Jolla Country Day School. As a local, it is an honor to have the opportunity to promote the mental and physical wellbeing of students from all cultural backgrounds who have the potential to make or have already made remarkable contributions to the San Diego community. I built a clinical foundation at Alliant International University’s Los Angeles campus where I earned my doctoral degree in clinical psychology with a focus in health psychology. The majority of my training took place at organizations that treat individuals with moderate to severe mental illnesses.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
