I'm particularly passionate about helping men, especially men of color, navigate life's challenges.
Societal pressures often make it difficult for men to seek mental health help. From a young age we are taught that we should be strong and independent, and that expressing emotions is a sign of weakness. This stigma can make it difficult to admit we need help, even to our closest loved ones.

I also enjoy working with men, helping men understand their feelings and their partners feelings so they can have the relationship they desire.
I can help you unlearn some of the things you learned that aren't working, and learn new ways of interacting so that relationships are more trusting, loving and less frustrating. I can help you navigate the fears that come up when you are brave enough to enter a close relationship.

In graduate school much of my research and clinical work was focused on interpersonal trauma, men and healthy, authentic masculinity, LGBT identity and relationships, and mindfulness and spirituality.
Psychotherapist James Finley says, “The tyranny of suffering lasts only as long as it takes for compassion to show up on the scene.” Many who find themselves reading this may experience themselves as subject to the ‘tyranny of suffering’ in some way and may be searching for a compassionate presence in which they can feel safe, be deeply seen, attentively listened to, and profoundly accepted. My name is Jacob Munhoz and I invite you to consider allowing me to be that compassionate presence for you. ***Out of deep respect for the confidential nature of this work, I do not work directly with insurance providers.***

For many men this question is very subjective and they unfortunately wait for a spouse, loved one or their employer to discover their hidden sexual life before considering help.
The Harvey Institute provides assessment, individual and group therapy for men of all sexual orientations concerned about their consensual out of control sexual behavior. We refer men involved in non-consensual sexual behavior to local specialists for assessment before they experience the devastating consequences of arrest and prosecution.

I help guys become better men, husbands, and fathers.
Perhaps you found my profile because you are considering therapy, and for that I applaud you. You have taken the first step toward healing and that is an incredible start. Maybe you still feel uncomfortable with the idea of therapy or you found me by accident. In that case, I sincerely look forward to answering your questions.

I have worked in addiction in just about every capacity there is available to man.
Being a human being is an amazing, terrifying, and sometimes really confusing and painful experience. We all live through these things, some of us are more familiar with depression, anxiety, avoidance, or hyperfixation on trying to control everything so that you KNOW that it's all the way it should be. These are just a few of the symptoms of the human condition. When we can step back and look at them with a different set of tools we can build awareness of how we may be able to approach these feelings with a more useful perspective. This leads us to feeling more grounded and in control of our physical, mental, and spiritual goals.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
