People seek therapy for many reasons, but one thing just about everyone entering therapy has in common is a feeling that something needs to change for life to become more fulfilling. Whether you’re encountering difficulties in personal relationships, grief and loss, work-related stress, a life transition, low self-esteem, the emotional impacts of traumatic experiences, or struggling with constellations of symptoms commonly referred to as “depression” or “anxiety,” I honor your individuality and tailor my approach to meeting your unique needs.

My mantra in life: Every day is a teaching moment.
Do you struggle with finding your purpose or understanding the direction in which your life is taking? Do you struggle with finding acceptance or questioning your identity? Do you experience a cloud of uncertainties? If you answered yes to any of those questions, or seek a better understanding of your life, I may be able to guide you through your journey. I know first-hand the importance of wanting to find representation and seeking guidance from those with similar narratives. It can be troublesome to question whether or not a therapist can relate to you when you are dealing with difficulties in your life.

I practice from several approaches, but something that makes me different is my training and ability to practice Anti-Racist Trauma-Informed Care when appropriate and indicated for consenting clients. Unequal access to resources and social prejudice and discrimination creates difference of opportunity that shape people and family’s ability to create sustainable predictability, which often leaders to intergenerational trauma and stress. This area of focus is often disregarded or uncomfortable to discuss, with therapy being little exception to that rule.

I’m similar to the clients I work with in a lot of ways. Before becoming a psychologist, I held numerous jobs as a warehouse worker, a cook, a sales man, a teacher, and a nurse. I began working in mental health in the 1983 first as an assistant for hospitalized persons suffering with mental illness. I then became a psychiatric nurse where I helped clients with their medications the psychiatrist prescribed them. For the last 24 years I have provided psychotherapy to hundreds of clients. I think my long time working as a therapist and my down to earth nature is what makes me different.

As a parent, it is difficult to see worry and self-doubt stand in the way of your teenager’s well-being and potential. You want your child to be happy and thrive, yet they appear anxious and unmotivated. You might lecture or give them advice, but that seems to create a larger wedge between you. Or even sets them off. You’re caught in a power struggle with the person you love the most. And all you want is to see them smile. I can help you.

I'm Andy and I am couple's and family therapist with a specialty in sex therapy. My work is about helping clients build genuine connection with others and a meaningful life. I’m kind, a bit silly, and will sometimes say things that feel hard. As a therapist I focus on emotions as communication, the ways our past informs our present, and how our body and thoughts connect.

I have particular experience in grief, death, and dying (I've done lots of hospice work); coping with life-threatening illness (I am a cancer survivor), anxiety, depression, and disorders involving delusion and mania.
Why do people go to therapy? Most often, it is because we are in a crisis of some kind. Although we all find crises painful, they are also opportunities for growth. In fact growth does not occur without discomfort, maybe even pain. Without that challenge, we will not grow. But we must also have support. That’s where therapy comes in. Through support and challenge, something new emerges. We don’t just get through. We grow. We come out the other side greater than we were.

Getting started in therapy can feel daunting and I can help to make that experience easier for you. My clients most frequently describe me as genuine, easy to talk to, and compassionate. I understand that we all cope in different ways and welcome having periods of light conversation and humor along the way. I strive to genuinely get to know you and help you identify what is causing your distress, so we can work towards resolving it. I help my clients learn and strengthen the skills needed to navigate difficult life experiences more efficiently.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
