I've worked in schools for the last twenty-three years, helping an array of children and teens experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as social, emotional, and academic challenges. I believe that young people are all amazing in their own ways. Children benefit from having someone in their corner unconditionally to help develop skills and strategies in an effort to become increasingly confident, independent, and successful both in and out of school. I value communication with parents to best help each client. I approach all of my clients in a warm and compassionate manner in an effort to develop a strong connection.

With over a decade of experience in behavioral healthcare as both a mental health counselor and researcher, I've worked with youth, adolescents, and adults on a wide range of challenges, including life transitions, work-life balance, relationships, health, substance use, and self-esteem. Drawing on techniques from Positive Psychology and Internal Family Systems Theory, I guide clients in crafting a lifestyle that empowers them to thrive, and I work with them to develop actionable steps to turn that vision into reality.

Starting or restarting therapy is a courageous step for individuals and for couples. Right now, you may feel stressed or overwhelmed with de mands of family and work, a recent loss of a loved one, painful conflicts with people you care about, deep hurts from the past, or unfulfilled dreams of how it all was supposed to be. Amidst the emotional pain you may be feeling and the realization that things are not how you want them to be, there can be the realistic hope that with the help of a therapist who is a good fit, you can find relief from the present pain and a path towards a life filled with joy, connection, and significance.

In order to achieve this, I create a confidential environment in which we can work together on self-exploration and inquiry.

With my many years in this field and in life, I bring a personal approach to my work in addictions and mental health.
In my 24 years as social worker at McLean Hospital and in private practice, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families who are dealing addiction to drugs and alcohol. I believe that one size does not fit all in the recovery process. I find traditional forms of recovery such as 12-step programs to be very helpful. I also utilize alternatives such as motivational enhancement therapy SMART recovery, which utilizes behavior modification techniques. I aid families in pursuing Al-Anon, where appropriate. I also facilitate interventions, both traditional and the CRAFT model, which utilizes a positive reinforcement approach.

My ideal client is an individual who is willing to participate in therapy. As a client, they are eager to identify their issues, needs, goals, and desires to better their lives. Someone who comes prepared each session to talk and is challenging oneself to be open and honest. I want to work with someone who believes in themselves. And one who does not give up on themselves or the therapeutic process.

If your loved one's substance use has become un manageable, you’ve tried everything but refuse to give up, and are desperately seeking hope- I know how you feel. I was raised in a large, chaotic household, and my own adult child has struggled with alcohol addiction and anxiety. Refusing to give up on my son, I found a way out for my family.

Coming from a Lead Clinician role for a Virtual Partial Hospitalization (PHP) Program, I don't believe in an "ideal" client. In my previous role, we rarely had insight into a client's clinical presentation before their intake. I have learned to tailor my approach to each client while aiding them in learning emotional regulation techniques and interventions to sustain sobriety.

I am a big believer that, when we are able to feel more at peace with ourselves, we find greater joy in life. The journey to feeling peaceful and satisfied is not always smooth–it can feel so personal that we may avoid talking about the “bumps” with our loved ones. Talking with (and thinking together with) someone who is objective & private can be so useful. I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker with over seven years of clinical experience. I have worked with patients who have felt down, worried about every day stressors, dealt with burnout, struggled with a work/life balance, and wanted to find more satisfaction out of life.

My ideal client is someone who is willing to work with me in order to achieve their goal. This includes being able to have back and forth conversation around ways to achieve that goal, as well as have the more difficult conversations when it comes to road blocks and the occasional self sabotaging behavior. I will always be honest in my assessments, and thoughts, and my hope would be that my client is as well.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
