The approach I take is a psychodynamic conversation with the individual(s) about what struggles and conflicts are present in their life. The goal of therapy is to identify the patterns of thinking and feeling, (positive and negative) that a person is using to manage the relationships in their life and to discover ways of adjusting those patterns to create a more positive experience of oneself and others. Therapist and client work together to understand and modify habits of thinking, feeling and behaving that create a stronger sense of self and happiness.

Not Taking New Clients “I need to see a counselor" is now becoming "I'm going to see a counselor" and sorting through profile after profile for that 'perfect' therapist may feel exciting/overwhelming/confusing/(insert feeling here). You may know the issue(s) you need to address or maybe you're realizing that whatever you've been doing hasn't been getting you to where you want to be in life. Regardless of your motivation to start therapy I am committed to providing a safe, positive, and non-judgmental space to assist you in reaching your goals.

Therapy should be thought of as a safe space that provides the ability for all to feel safe and heard. As a counselor with over 10 years of experience working with the substance use population, I have come to realize substance use affects more than just the person in recovery but those around them as well. I specialize in the affects and healing of those in recovery from substance use, families and loved ones who need a safe space to discuss the anxiety and stressors that come along with the diagnosis as well as providing coping skills and tools to those in need as they relate to men's issues.

Are you experiencing problems with alcohol or drugs? Are you caught up in a cycle of other addictive behaviors such as gaming, the Internet or gambling? I have good news and bad news for you. First the bad news: it takes effort to stop addictive behaviors, and to address the underlying emotional or trauma issues that compel you to relapse over and over again. There’s no magic wand, no Abracadabra. Now the good news. The cycle doesn’t have to be endless, and recovery is possible! I do individual, couples and family counseling.

I have experience working with and treating all types of addiction, including both substance and behavioral addictions. I also have considerable experience with and understanding of mental illnesses, including especially depressive, anxiety, and bipolar disorders. I tend to have the most success treating those for whom other approaches have not been effective. My approach is best fitted for those who feel utterly broken and desperate for change.

If you are struggling with feeling stuck in the dark and lost in the past, then I may be able to help. Working together I can guide you to find the light within what feels like darkness. Being open to discuss and explore times of feeling lost, how we became lost and how we can find ourselves again. Utilizing your pre-existing strengths and internal listening to create growth and positive change is where the work begins. From creating this space, I believe that you can create healthy coping skills, improve communication skills/relationships, set appropriate boundaries, decrease levels of depression and anxiety and so much more.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
