In meeting with folks for therapeutic conversations, I value being present, curious, and caring. I take a de-centered and non-expert stance, creating space for you to develop a sense of agency and support as you face the problems and struggles of life. My hope is to help you feel not-so-alone with problems in life and to give you a space to develop clarity about what is important to you, about what your hopes and values are, and about what steps you would like to take that support your preferred ways of living.

The demands of school, work, family and social relationships can be overwhelming for people of all ages. Societal pressures may add to our stress. We all need support as we navigate the different stages of our lives. We can get stuck, feel very low, or become increasingly anxious along the way. Children and adolescents may express or cope with these difficult emotions with troubling behavior. Parents often feel helpless or lost trying to support their children. Individual and family psychotherapy can help us better understand and manage our emotions, increase our sense of worth and control, and live a more fulfilling life.

I've been a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) for almost twenty years. I work with individuals, couples, and families out of the basement office of my home in Arlington, MA. My most basic therapeutic approach is that everyone is born good and whole. But, life happens and it sends us difficulties that we can’t always understand or handle. These difficulties can happen as children, adolescents, adults, in school, home, work, and in our marriages. Sometimes these problematic life experiences can affect our core beliefs negatively and/or overwhelm our abilities to cope.

I borrow from a number of modalities to be flexible enough to meet you where you are; including cbt, dbt, act, internal family system).
I have appointments available on THURS/FRI, immediate openings. This is a place of openness, realistic goal setting, and freedom to discuss the issues most important to you. I typically work with children/adolescents/young adults or parents to reach your goals. You may be struggling with a trauma history, identity development, overwhelming stress or a need for additional coping skills to just get through the day. I like to be straight forward and still compassionate, direct on issues and supportive in solutions. Together we can identify what's working, what's not and how we find the balance to support everyday functioning.

As the global pandemic has shown us, sometimes life becomes overwhelming and uncontrollable. During these times it may be best to talk with someone outside of your community of family, friends or co-workers. A warm hearted professional to lend a moment of support and guidance. I share with clients in deciding how best to approach the issues, with the intent of addressing both the current distressing symptoms and long-standing patterns of behavior that are getting in the way of a thriving life. My practice is telehealth-based, and I accept direct pay (some prefer for privacy) as well as most PPO plans as an Out of Network provider.

I have also studied with several recognized leaders in the couples and family systems fields and acquired proven skills that promote relational healing.
I am deeply curious about human relationships; the conditions that make them mutually satisfying and joyful as well as how they can go wrong leaving people feeling in pain, lonely or unworthy. My practice consists of couples and adults whose relationships with themselves and/or others are in disrepair. We all have many relationships. Yet, the more personal and intimate they are, the more distressing and challenging they can be at one time or another. I encourage individuals and couples looking to discover greater relational joy and willing to look both inward and outward for more satisfying life solutions to contact me.

Life Coaching or Counseling with me often focuses on progress in school, employment, legal or financial difficulties, substance abuse, and family dynamics.
Sometimes you need a bit more support from an outside source to see issues through a new lens. I am here to help you do that. We can start by saying that anxiety, substance use, depression, rumination, and approval seeking, are all normal human challenges. Many of these problems surface in early adulthood which is why I specialize in helping people launch into adulthood with better coping skills.

Sometimes one seeks therapy to find immediate relief from distressing symptoms. Other times, therapy helps one investigate behaviors, beliefs, and relationship patterns, whether they be romantic, professional, or familial. With therapeutic guidance, every person/family can advance towards their goals. It is my intention to help you do that. I provide psychotherapy for adults, individually or in relationship(s), and families who are interested in improving the quality of their lives together, but may have some concerns as to how that could happen.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
