Amy Studer (she/zir) has a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling and specializes in accessibility for those with disabilities, trauma, chronic pain, neurodivergence, and severe mental health diagnoses.
Our clients often identify as LGBTQIAs2+ / Queer, Non-monogamous, sex positive or sex neutral, neurodivergence, and or disabled and living within Missouri or Kansas. However, identifying in these communities is not a requirement for services through AAC. Clients often start therapy to work on goals to learn more about identities, setting boundaries with others in their lives, opening up their relationship, learning more about themselves or others gender or sexual expression. Through individual, relationship, or family counseling we work to increase healthy communication based on our values, instead of assumed social norms.

I provide care for those experiencing physical and/or emotional pain, social or cultural disconnect, paralyzing fear about the state of the world, sense of purposelessness, and feeling lost in life.
I’m no different from the clients I see. Like everyone else, I'm human. I've been through both wonderful and difficult experiences that have shaped who I am and how I help. I've helped people let go of unhealthy thinking patterns or "sticky webs" they get caught up in, allowing a more authentic and present-moment experiencing of life, as it is, without self-judgement and radical acceptance and self-love. My clients discover it's possible to live life fearlessly, to stand true to core values, and act with conviction to be who you want to be and discover your full-potential.

Psychotherapy is for individuals who are motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Some individuals seek out therapy to improve their lives and to help recognize and remove barriers to a healthy lifestyle, relationships, and productivity. While others find that troubling symptoms of anxiety, depression, failed relationships, chronic pain, and loss are too intense to manage on their own. I work with individuals presenting with a range of emotional and psychological needs in a safe and respectful atmosphere. I respect and encourage individuals' motivation to change and help them develop their own internal resources to make lasting positive changes.

During hard times, we can lose our sense of self and struggle to get it back. We are all complex multifaceted people with many different parts of us, which can often cause symptoms that get in the way of relationships, productivity, or cause feelings of depression, anxiety and hopelessness. Together, let's work to recover your sense of well-being and then build a life where you are thriving beyond your struggles. I utilize IFS as a primary modality as well as take an eclectic approach, meaning I use a variety of techniques based on what your situation calls for, at the time you need it the most.

I have 10 years of experience in the mental and behavioral health profession. I specialize in unresolved trauma, anxiety and depression. With specific coping strategies you can have the power over and control of your behaviors, emotions and thoughts. My treatment focus range is ages 14 to 65+. I am prior service (i.e., United States Navy). I have a working history in an Inpatient Behavioral Health (IBH) service, a Behavioral Health Intensive Outpatient Program (BHIOP), and an Addiction Medication Intensive Outpatient Program (AMIOP). These opportunities offered practical experience; however, I prefer individual therapy.

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
