I understand that there is no one approach to deal with life's tough issues. I am committed to working collaboratively with my clients to meet their goals and tailoring therapy to their specific needs and experiences. Additionally, I am deeply committed to providing culturally responsive treatment to every client I work with. I believe this is crucial for any type of psychotherapy to be effective and helpful.

I view psychotherapy as a process of exploration and affirmation of one's life path, including the experiences and wisdom gained along this journey. This is just the beginning point for the psychotherapeutic process of healing and identifying one's pathway to continue the journey of personal growth, transformation and achieving balance (mind, body & Spirit). I see my role as a therapist as that of a witness and source of support and knowledge, joining with you to help facilitate the individual process of developing a deeper sense of self-awareness, achieving personal growth and transformation: to create the life you want.

Each of us is on a journey. At times on this journey we may feel lost, alone, overwhelmed or inadequate. In our work together, I help you find light for your path, the space to heal and learn from past adventures, and courage to move forward. We forget that we are immensely powerful and wise, and as a witness in your journey, I will help guide you to your heart where your power and wisdom dwell.

Seeking out help and accessing therapy services is not easy, and there are many barriers that prevent people from getting the help they need and deserve. One of my goals is to help reduce these barriers by creating a space that is welcoming, safe, and honors the various identities you may hold. It’s important for me to work with my clients in a collaborative manner while using strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches. My hope is that my clients get to live an authentic life that is fulfilling and embodies self-acceptance.

I take a decolonized approach to therapy and work with folks from marginalized locations, including folx from intersectional identities. I believe in empowering clients to tap into their innate wisdom and validate their expertise in the experience of their own lives. We explore what has worked, what is tolerable, and what needs to be changed. Healing begins in relationship to one another. Therapy, in my opinion, models a way to be in healthy relationship. I aim to provide a safe environment to allow the parts of yourself that are in conflict with one another to emerge, to listen, and to learn from each other.

To me, a counseling relationship is one that allows a person to clearly see the very best within themselves, enabling them to work towards being and becoming all they can be. Part of this might involve developing an understanding of where our wounds have come from, how we might tend to them, and how they are incremental in giving us an awareness into who we are and what we aren't.

I am, first and foremost, a highly trained Christian Therapist. For over thirty years I have worked with couples, individuals, and families helping put an anchor back into their lives. As a Marriage and Family Therapist who is licensed in both Colorado and California, I have two Masters degrees: a Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Masters of Divinity (a three-year ministerial academic training) both earned from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California that has been coined “The Princeton of the West”. I use a "systems" approach to marriage and family therapy which means I view each person as part of a whole.

Muslim Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognize an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
