Having experienced the sudden loss of my own child, i learned first hand just how effective the skills of DBT can and continue to be in my own journey of healing.
John Lennon nailed it: "Life is what happens when we are busy making other plans." Without warning we my find ourselves dealing with the loss of a relationship, a job, or a difficult diagnosis. Perhaps parenting, which used to be so easy, does not seem to be working. For others, years of carrying so much anxiety and stress has now become too heavy and is getting in the way. Possibly life itself has turned upside down, magnifying everything else to the point that it is just overwhelming. I get it and can offer support, skills and a path towards reclaiming your well-being and a life worth living.

I walk alongside clients struggling with mood disorders, conflict resolution, grief, trauma, executive functioning, boundaries, delayed adolescence, addiction, spirituality, communication, identity, and personality disorders.
If you're looking for lasting change, more fulfilling relationships, and meaningful connection, then let's begin. Whatever brings you to therapy, there is hope. Together we will observe how the events in your life have formed deep rooted beliefs about how the world will respond to you. I believe that change happens in the context of relationships. Our therapeutic relationship will work to ease your distress and equip you towards transformation. We will experience pain in life, but I believe we are not meant to experience it alone.

I work with individuals in all phases of addiction recovery, including dual diagnosis. My passion is helping individuals regain the confidence and trust that was lost due to a myriad of core issues that contribute to addiction. I believes that addiction is a family system disease and I will help significant family members navigate and understand the nature of their loved one's struggle. I also work closely with the LGBTQ community, especially individuals and their partners struggling with gender identity challenges. And I have extensive experience with grief and loss and difficult life transitions caused by cognitive decline.

You’re ready to move on from the toxic relationship, the trauma, or the loss of a loved one.
Always on edge, waiting for something bad to happen? Are those disturbing memories stuck on repeat in the back of your mind? You feel disconnected from everyone, just going through the motions. Your body stays tense, and no matter what you do, you can't relax. Sleep's a struggle too—you wake up from nightmares. You might be pushing people away, scared of getting hurt again, or avoiding places that bring back too many painful memories. It feels like you're stuck in the past, unable to move forward.

I specialize in grief, complex PTSD, sexual trauma, family of origin dynamics, children and adolescents, mood disorders, recovery from emotional abuse/neglect, sex & intimacy issues.
Experiencing grief, trauma, or relationship challenges can hinder our ability to feel calm and clear-headed as we navigate our lives. Symptoms like anxiety, depression, reactivity, or codependency may have become familiar, creating obstacles to personal growth. Strained interactions? Feeling out of control? This distress can be overwhelming, discouraging, and utterly exhausting; processing these difficult experiences alone tends to exacerbate the problem. People seek my support to explore their past safely, gain insight, and heal; fostering their unique strengths and increasing their capacity for insight, transformation, and growth.

I have found that core beliefs can contribute to ineffectual coping skills, as well as difficulties in life transitions and with grief and loss.
I am a State of Texas Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. I obtained both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Texas at Austin. I accomplished this after a previous career that included being a union representative. My own life experiences drew me to social work and I have worked for many years in various forms of addiction treatment. I work with clients with the understanding that “It’s not what’s wrong with you but it’s what happened to you.”

I believe that the most therapeutic experiences involve a mix of straightforwardness, empathy and empowerment, and I strive to do this with my clients. I truly believe everyone is doing the best they can, with what they have, at the time. That's where we'll start. I am challenging, curious and straightforward. Areas of interest and experience for me include, but are not limited to, trauma stemming from: abuse, family of origin, relationships with people who have personality disorder, and grief (esp. after suicide loss); anxiety, dissociative issues, addiction, depression, relationship issues, and spiritual growth.

Years of studying complex trauma have repeatedly taught me that when people find themselves in need of therapy, (outside of specific life altering events such as grief and loss), it is the result of dysfunctional development.
You don’t need a therapist. You need to know what a therapist knows. Therapy isn’t magic. 80% of therapeutic success comes from just having a strong therapeutic relationship. The other 20% of that is the benefit from the knowledge and education the therapist has and effectively shares. So how effective might your journey be, if YOU had that knowledge and insight yourself? The brain is wired to grow and loves information. When we understand what’s going on and why, we feel safer, empowered, and prepared. The best thing I can do for you as a therapist -or just another human- is to share what I know and catch you up.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
