My areas of expertise include grief and loss, trauma, life transitions, as well as Christian counseling.
A Resting Place Counseling was created to provide others with a safe place to let their guard down and be themselves. I hope that by reclaiming your time and mind, you will continue to show up for yourself. In therapy, my role is not to tell you what to do but to establish a therapeutic partnership with you and develop a unique plan that enables you to achieve your goals and be your best self. I desire that while you and I work together, you will feel seen, heard, and valued.

I have worked extensively with issues of anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief and PTSD, just to name a few.
I have had over 42 years of experience treating adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups, primarily utilizing the Cognitive Behavioral therapy approach, along with healthy doses of humor (when appropriate, of course). I am a firm believer that the bedrock of successful treatment begins with establishing a solid connection and rapport with the people I treat. My philosophy is that the patient is the captain of the ship and I am the navigator; the captain tells me where he/she wants to go (goals) and I suggest the routing to get there - and as a team...we'll get there!

New clients often ask, "how will talking to you about my problems help me?" All of us on this web site would probably agree that working with a caring and interested therapist can have positive, even dramatic, results - - whether that means the relief of depression and anxiety, feeling better and happier in your intimate relationships, dealing with loss, or generally liking yourself better.
What is the first meeting like? I want to hear about your immediate concerns, to get to know something of your life story, and to see how we might work together to achieve your goals.

If painful experiences were met with confusing or anxious responses from others or described in manners that did not respond to emotional needs, then a child or individual would likely cope with difficulties by disconnecting from the threatening emotional meanings. Working with me means focusing on how to care for you so that you can b lossom into the best version of yourself.
Life can be beautiful, but lately it feels overwhelming and messy. Emotional, physical, relational, and professional/academic stressors can leave you feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained. As a result, you feel disconnected from yourself and others. You feel like you’re going through life in a haze. At the end of each day, you wonder how you can summon the energy to do it all again tomorrow. You’ve been so busy caring for others that you’re ignoring your own needs. You’ve never been more dissatisfied with your body and health. You find yourself in a cycle of unhealthy habits that feel impossible to break.

If you are experiencing a roadblock or facing a potentially new path or way to live, our work together would include reframing the roadblock as a potential crossroads in which neglected parts of yourself could be explored so as to live a life of greater authenticity, integrity and wholeness. With over 20 years experience, I specialize in "transitions" or what many people experience as either blocks or bridges in their lives as well as the stress that accompanies them. Even good change can be stressful and in some languages, the word for crisis actually means "opportunity."

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
