Do you struggle with distressing thoughts, feelings, or relationships? I view these problems as both present and past, meaning what we learn early in life may be unknowingly affecting the way we behave in the present. The counseling process can help to illuminate personal strengths, goals, and solutions to fit your unique story and personal desires.

Do you desire more joy in your life? Would you like to learn how to be your own healer and trust your intuition vs. living life from fear? Life may be painful, but you needn’t suffer or “feel stuck.” There is a way to live life to the fullest without being attached to emotions. Intuitive psychotherapy is where the therapist uses their own intuition in the healing process. Clients also learn to develop and trust their intuition through specialized somatic and inner child work interventions.

Hello, my name is Mary Baummier and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I use a collaborative and gentle approach to help my client's overcome trauma, depression, and anxiety. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for most of my clients. In this approach, we identify what the goals in therapy are and identify measurable ways to reach these goals. I also use a structured approach called Traumatic Incident Reduction with those who have experienced trauma. This allows the client to process the traumatic incident in a guided and safe way to reduce the negative emotions and feelings associated with the traumatic event.

Do you consider yourself a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)? Sometimes it can feel like we're missing some secret rulebook that everyone else follows. We may even gaslight ourselves into believing we are too much. Sensitivity isn’t a flaw! I’m here to help you reconnect with your intuition and uncover your gifts that society and perhaps your family have suppressed. You don’t have to betray yourself to fit in. Sensitivity can leave you overwhelmed or disconnected, especially when compounded by trauma, but together, we can work on embracing your sensitivity, building fulfilling relationships, and finding a path to a more satisfying life.

I have a relational approach to therapy. As humans, our connections to others influence how we relate to the world and ourselves. I encourage authenticity and help my clients to express themselves fully inside and outside of session. In return I offer my authentic self into session, allowing clients to know and relate to me. I believe a genuine relationship between client and therapist is required to create the space where real change can happen.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
