My name is Lauren and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California.
Life can present many challenges. Most of the time, we can successfully handle the trials and tribulations of daily living; occasionally we get overwhelmed. To help cope and feel better, we consult a professional who sorts and sheds light on the elements that caused these challenges. In the process, we will talk about how you feel and understand why you feel the way you do. Most importantly, we learn to successfully handle the initiating emotional triggers in a way that helps you. In the therapy room I am a therapist that believes that you are the expert in your life and I will facilitate your work in order to reach your goals.

I provide individual, family and couples therapy using a mix of orientations in a calm, safe environment. Primarily I provide psychodynamic talk therapy that is insight oriented and developmentally based. I also use cognitive behavioral strategies where appropriate. In addition I am able to offer psychological and neuropsychological assessments for ages 6 years and older. Understanding yourself and your loved ones is an essential step towards change.

The world feels like an especially challenging place right now. Financial pressures, work expectations, family responsibilities, and other challenges can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and overwhelm. Societal expectations to present a "perfect life" can compound these feelings and cause fear, shame, or embarrassment in seeking out support. Unfortunately, these feelings, if left unchecked, can sometimes worsen and negatively impact our sense of well-being.

Life is an extraordinary journey filled with constant changes and challenges. Therapy is a powerful tool that helps us navigate our way through some of the more chaotic and confusing times. The best answers are found by looking inward; examining personal strengths, values and beliefs, to gain insight and promote personal growth. I provide individual, couples and family therapy with a focus on building healthy relationships with self, family, friends and community. Most of our significant relationships fall somewhere on the continuum between dependency and interdependency.

How can Family Therapy help you? Is there someone in your family that seems to be the center of all the conflict? Do you feel helpless or that your situation is out of control? If you and your family are struggling, let me help you. I help families resolve behavioral issues through guiding parents with positive parenting strategies. I also support children so they learn different coping skills to express their emotions without acting out in undesirable ways. Family therapy can strengthen the parent-child bond and decrease unwanted behaviors. Parents can learn new ways to help their children and gain the confidence they need.

My therapeutic orientations are mainly psychodynamic and person-centered, combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Structural Family Therapy approaches.
I'm very much a client-centered therapist and collaborate with my clients in defining the goals and paths of recovery. Being an immigrant myself, I work extensively with immigrants and their families, as well as families of mixed racial/cultural backgrounds. I am a strong advocate for under-served, underrepresented groups, and for victims of social injustice and domestic violence.

I began providing individual services in 2002, at UCSD, where I received extensive training on creating behavior change, and then spent 10 years running a military family counseling department.
Life and all of its stages are filled with change. At times those changes are welcomed, and other times they are unexpected, feel burdensome, and create worry. I will listen and will focus on understanding your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to empower you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself, set goals based on your values, and feel relief. As a clinical social worker, I focus on the whole person in their environment. I have developed a nurturing, inclusive, person-centered approach that values each individual’s unique situation and decision making process, and look forward to connecting with you.

in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California.
I believe the goal of therapy is for the client to feel seen and understood, and that everyone has the capacity for growth and change. By developing a caring, empathic, and trusting relationship with my clients, it becomes possible for the individual to make connections, deepen his/her awareness and gain clarity about relationships, problems and personal patterns. It is through this process that growth and change can be made.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
