Are you grappling with the impacts of a loss, medical diagnosis, or trauma? Loss is common to the human experience, but when it stems from the death of a loved one or a cancer diagnosis, it can be especially isolating and overwhelming. You’re asking big questions: Will I always feel like this? Is this normal? When will my suffering end? And despite trying therapy in the past or talking to your friends and family, it’s felt like no one has truly understood your experience. You’re craving warmth, safety, and radical unconditional regard—somewhere all of your emotions, questions, and fears can be freely shared and expressed.

With 9 years of doctoral-level training and years experience providing individual, couples, and family services for a diverse range of presenting life issues, I endeavor to create the optimal therapeutic space to assist my clients in confronting the interpersonal challenges and inevitable confrontations with self that life, at times, presents.
Whether one seeks relief from anxiety, trauma, relational impasses, or life disillusionment, therapy can help. It is unfortunate that insufficiently engaged approaches to therapy, prohibitive rates, and the unconscionable reluctance of most clinicians to accept insurance fail so many clients, who in good faith seek to discover a healing of heart and mind. As a psychodynamic therapist, I view my role as an empathic change agent employed to help bring about a fuller knowledge of self and a more liberated experience of life and relationship. I also supervise highly promising interns from NWU available for as low as $15-30 per session.

Have you experienced a loss that has left you grieving more than just the loss itself? You might be grieving a person you thought you knew or a future you always imagined. Grief might feel numb—staying as busy as possible to avoid confronting the pain. Or it might feel crushing—like you can’t do anything without being reminded of what you’ve lost. Maybe you’re a young adult who’s trying to figure out who you actually want to be in life. You’re noticing patterns in your relationships that leave you feeling like something is wrong with you. You’re wondering what’s missing, and you want to get to the bottom of it.

I specialize in group therapy, family therapy and working individually with adults and adolescents.
Relationships are powerful. They have the power to inspire us, help us grow, or they can smother and even damage us. We spend much of our time and energy engaged in relationships, tolerating, fixing, and avoiding relationships. I believe that relationships are powerful vehicles for change. As a psychotherapist, I offer a relationship that is warm, challenging, accepting, and personal where you can feel a full range of emotions, learn, grow, and attain your goals.

Anxiety leaves us feeling on edge, over-controlled, and disconnected from our true selves. You’re someone who tries every stress relief technique in the book, but still finds yourself worried, feeling exhausted and empty at the end of each day. Constantly filling up other people’s cups– at work, in relationships, with family and friends, but who is filling up your cup? You’re ready to make a change. You’re ready to lessen the emotional burden. You’re ready to set boundaries and keep them. Most of all, you’re ready to break the patterns that leave you feeling stuck. I want to help you get there.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
