A cornerstone of my treatment process is to work closely with the family members of patients - often neglected in the treatment process.
In my fifteen years of working in the behavioral health field, I have witnessed the damage that unmanageable behavior can have on individuals and those they love. This behavior is usually manifested in the misuse of drugs, and often an untreated (or undiagnosed) mental health condition such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, or Bipolar Disorder. By the time individuals seek help for these conditions, most often there has been a tremendous amount of hurt, shame, and guilt. I have a strong commitment to providing treatment in a safe, respectful, and confidential setting where individuals and families can begin to heal from these painful wounds.

My specialty is working with individuals (18yo and up), couples and family members. My focus is to improve your relationships with one another, and work on your individual growth. I am very successful at engaging those of you who historically have had difficulty connecting to therapy or to therapists. My demeanor is very warm, relaxed and nurturing, inviting a safe environment for you to challenge yourself to be honest and to grow. Although I work very well with couples, I also challenge individuals to remove the blocks which have been very disruptive in their lives, at work, home or in their social life.

I am a LCSW who works with individuals, couples and families to promote more peaceful and fulfilling relationships. I work primarily from a family systems perspective which looks at how family relationships inform the way we view ourselves and relate to others. Reconnecting with each other and learning to communicate more effectively is an integral part of therapy. However, at times, reconnecting with family may not be possible or healthly. I help those individuals accept and grieve the loss they are experiencing and to create their own sense of family through developing and strengthening friendships and connecting to environmental resources.

Waitlist for new clients
I’ve lived all over the US, felt the joys and the hurts of raising a family and being a partner to someone.
“I don’t feel heard,” or “I can’t seem to do anything right,” are common feelings expressed in couples’ therapy. Another client may come confused, “People are telling me I have anger issues.” And other folks feel overwhelmed and stressed, “My life is changing dramatically and I’m not sure what to do next.” As one who has had many life experiences, I may identify with many of the feelings you are experiencing. Whether it is your relationships, feelings of anxiety or depression, or struggles with the choice’s life has put in front of you.

People decide to begin therapy for a variety of reasons. Many have had painful or traumatic experiences that they are unable to move past. Some feel stuck in unhelpful thought patterns or behaviors, or struggle to find fulfillment in relationships or at work. Others may feel burdened with excessive worry, or with feelings of low self worth and inadequacy. I believe that recovery involves healing of the mind and body, and I am trained in several modalities, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), eating disorder treatment, and suicide prevention.

Life is full of transitional moments; changes that impact how we think, how we function, and how we connect to the world. Let us work together to build a harmonious connection between how you feel, where you are, and where you see yourself. Short-term, goal-oriented therapy is available. Or, perhaps you would prefer to delve deeper into the who, the why, and the how of things. With either modality, you can expect to be met with respect, compassion, and cultural competence.

Answering the essential question of "Who am I?", can be difficult in today's world. Even as the world gets "smaller", supposedly more connected, many of us still wander without passion for self-discovery. I would propose a strong sense of identity is essential to good mental health. Satisfying that question of "Who am I" must include physical and emotional presence in each moment and a strong sense of connectivity with mind, body and world. Anxiety, depression, self-esteem and trauma detach us from becoming who want we want be.

I view psychotherapy as a way to reach intellectual, emotional, and spiritual balance. I combine psychoanalytic understanding with mind-body techniques. I focus on uncovering patterns and barriers that prevent you from reaching your potential and become your true self. Psychotherapy is a process that allows us to gain insight into better understanding of yourself and others, to learn new, more constructive ways of dealing with difficulties, and more enjoyable ways of relating to others and yourself. It is a way to uncover clarity of our past, present, and future, which can lead to wisdom of oneself, life, and the peace of mind.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
