My primary counseling approach with clients is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
I use a trauma-informed care approach and aim to keep the therapeutic space as safe as possible: I take this very seriously and know safety must be present in order for true work to happen. You are the one who ultimately decides where we go and my ultimate role is to be right by your side on your journey of healing and exploration. My approach is to provide psychoeducation on a number of different topics as they come up organically so that you can learn in conjunction with healing.

You want to form healthier relationships, break away from never feeling good enough, from depression, anxiety, and shame. Together we can get to the root of what is causing these unwanted patterns of thoughts and behaviors. It's time to live a life where you are living your values, feeling content about your decisions, and are empowered to face life's challenges.

I believe that we all have things in life that we need help dealing with or working through. As a counselor I provide a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental place for people to get the help they are seeking. I use several therapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, somatic experiencing and emotional focused therapy to name a few. When working with couples I use the Gottman marriage approach as well as the therapies listed above. I may explore with the client their past and present in order to promote self-discovery/awareness that will assist them with the outcome they desire.

Your mind tells you; it was so long ago, and it wasn't that bad...then why is life so hard to do? At times, you feel alone and yearn for a sense of belonging. Sometimes you feel the darkness of your pain is too much for others to bare and you spent a lifetime trying to cover up the hurt, but now it feels too big of a burden to hold inside. Your forced smile no longer covers up the pain of the past. Your pain is not too much for me to hold. You are worthy of healing and I am here to hold your darkness.

**NEW CLIENTS - Please email me** No one deserves to live in pain. For therapy to work, you need three things: curiosity about yourself and your interactions with others, an authentic connection with your therapist, and concrete, practical tools and skills to promote real and lasting change. My job is to facilitate an understanding of what is causing you pain and getting in your way of creating your best life. As your therapist, I don’t “just listen.” I use an integrative approach, combining several modalities to create the most effective treatment for each client. I practice remote therapy with individual adults.

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
