With over fifteen years of experience working with families in crisis, I can be of particular assistance in cases of marital distress, divorce, co-parenting issues, and anxiety surrounding parent/child contact.
Life can be challenging. Sometimes the obstacles you face are relatively simple and you can work through them on your own, while other times they are more than you feel equipped to manage alone. I believe this is exactly what therapy is intended for. Whether you’re facing a normal life adjustment such as a new child, a new job, navigating the break-up of a relationship, or significant conflict within your family, I am here to help you process through your experience. I strive to create a space of mutual respect, trust, and awareness where you can begin the work of restoration.

Counseling is an important way to invest in your health and future. For some, counseling can be a way to work through difficult life seasons, including career transition, parenting or relationship stress, divorce, or grief/loss. For others who may have a history of abuse, depression, anxiety, or other condition, counseling can help one learn to manage symptoms and to pursue a life of joy and contentment. For couples or families, for whom old ways of connecting and resolving problems are no longer working, psychotherapy provides a way to explore how a situation began and to develop new ways of resolving difficulties.

I'm interested in and have experience with helping people as they enter new developmental stages such as early adulthood, empty nesters, and people going through major life changes such as loss and/or divorce.
When you're struggling to find your way through emotional pain, choosing the right psychotherapist can be confusing. You want to find someone you can trust. You want that person to listen without judging and offer space for healing. The professional relationship between you and your psychotherapist should be based on mutual respect, genuineness, and healthy boundaries. In such a relationship, you can develop insight and understanding, as well as learn coping strategies to help relieve your pain.

Natural and/or national disasters, death, divorce, and other personal crises absolutely do affect human beings; but many try to push these events aside (as though they never happened).
Tele-mental health therapy provides the means of reaching clients who might, otherwise, never seek treatment due to reasons such as having anxiety about entering a therapist's office, time factor or distance, illness, or continued need for social distancing. I utilize a HIPPA supported tele-health platform. Each allows clients to engage in secure and confidential telehealth appointments. Clients are granted access to private tele-mental health sessions while remaining inside the security and comfort of your home, or perhaps during the office lunch break. I offer weekday sessions, as well as limited evening and weekend appointments.

The vulnerability required of therapy can be overwhelming. As someone who has personally experienced not only the benefits of therapy, but the support & compassion of a therapist, I can safely say working with someone who sees you as an individual can truly do wonders. When clients seek my therapeutic services, I don’t view them as having “problems.” I recognize them as individuals, stuck in patterns of behaviors no longer helpful. As an upbeat & energetic person, I provide a safe, open, & validating environment to facilitate change.

Vulnerability: while rewarding, can be daunting. It isn’t easy to let someone into your internal landscape and I value the possibility of learning yours. My name is Sam and I work with clients to become intimately comfortable with the buried and beautifully impactful aspects of themselves. Often, the relationship to yourself contributes to how your days unfold in the world around you. When was the last time you heard or nurtured the parts of yourself that long for you? In doing so, a gateway opens up to a sense of self-worth that will allow you to experience yourself and your environment with a new lens.

Sometimes life can present us with difficulties, as well as opportunities, that we don't expect or aren't sure how to handle. Many people find ways of healing, growing, and even striving through the counseling process. Once you've decided to seek out psychotherapy, finding the therapist who is the right fit for you can feel overwhelming. The psychologists, professional counselors and social workers at River City Psychological Services (RCPS) strive to create a safe environment where people can grow and heal.

When I browse bios on Psychology Today or any other directory, they all start to blend together. Choosing among us likely comes down to an intangible feeling, which I think is perfectly fine! From my perspective, it's challenging to find the right words because I'm not here to sell you anything or convince you of something—that goes against everything I believe in. I'm here to help you find your own way. I suppose sharing what sets me apart from other therapists might be most helpful, but this may sound arrogant, so please bear with me.

The deepest goal of counseling is learning about yourself by teaching me about you. This idea can be daunting. You might be asking yourself, “What will I learn? Am I ready? What will this journey be like?” Sometimes starting the process is the hardest part! The beauty of counseling is that the journey doesn’t have to be taken alone. When you find a therapist that fits well, it can feel less like stumbling through a dark forest and more like forging a path of your own. No matter what brings you to therapy, feeling empowered, safe, and understood through the process can make all the difference in the world.

Hi there! I specialize in working with folks who are experiencing behaviors and emotions that are difficult to understand. Together, we can explore what those thoughts and feelings are, how best to understand them, learn about treatment approaches, and set goals. I enjoy helping to build a support network that has your best interest at heart, and allows you to share your experience with those supports in a way that gives you choice and dignity. LGBTQAI+ affirming and compassionate care is the standard here, as is support around accessing reproductive healthcare.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
