Areas in which I have particular counseling expertise include: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma and abuse, relationships, and adolescent and teenage counseling.
During my career, I've worked with many diverse individuals, couples, and families to find healing and restoration from a variety of complicated and often very messy problems. I offer a unique measure of acceptance, support, and assistance for my clients. Besides my experience and training, I've personally struggled with difficult life issues myself. I know healing is possible and I am committed to helping you find it. If you choose to work with me, together we'll discover the root causes of your predicament and strive toward making changes that will ultimately lead to greater happiness and satisfaction.

Changing how we think and feel about situations outside of our control can be powerful, while also acknowledging and reforming societal expectations that contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and unhappiness.
Currently unable to take new clients! I will update this when I have availability. Finding a counselor you feel safe with is essential. I am offering free 15 minute phone consultations so you can decide if I am the right fit for you. Life is hard enough right now, even if you don’t live with a mental health condition. I am also here to process stress, life transitions, relationship concerns, family issues, difficult emotions, behavioral concerns, coping skills, communication skills, safety planning, dismantling systems of oppression, and other concerns. I believe in collaborating to find solutions that are unique to your problems.

What I want you to know is that you are not alone in this world; there is hope that you can get through this challenging time in your life. When feeling overwhelmed it is difficult to know where to start when making a change. By integrating social work theories into practice, I recognize that all aspects of a person’s life can impact their wellbeing. Whether it's depression, anxiety, life transitions, or traumatic events I take an approach that helps to understand how the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of ones’ life interact together to create the individual and together we find the best way to reach your goals.

I became a therapist because I saw the importance of sharing our stories without fear of judgment. It’s because of this understanding that I strive to create a space for you to feel safe to be your true self no matter where you are in your mental health journey. When working together, we will focus on your individual needs and goals–these could include anxiety, depression, life transitions, family conflict, or trauma just to name a few. Overall, my goal is to provide support in whatever area you're seeking therapy for.

I believe people want to be heard, seen and validated. It can be challenging to find your voice and identity. Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, and Addiction just add to that weight, fueling avoidance and hopelessness. Trying to navigate all of this alone may feel overwhelming and impossible. You don’t have to go it alone. I would be elated to help! I am accepting new clients for in person therapy and tele-health. I work with teens and adults of all ages.

You’re on a unique journey. Your struggle matters. If you are reading this chances are you may be struggling in a particular area of life or with patterns of thinking, behaving, and relating that are no longer serving your deeper intentions. When we are no longer aligned with our deeper intentions, we can start to feel anxious or depressed, or our relationships can suffer. Often outdated modes of coping learned early in life can become counterproductive. When we can increase positive coping, better regulate our emotions, and understand what our emotions are trying to tell us, we have increased success in all areas of life.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
