We maintain a telehealth Practice in both California and in Oregon. We believe we are all deeply impacted by "systems" in which we function: Family Systems, Community, work, neighborhood, weather, political and medical systems. For many of us economic and social justice systems also impact us in these times. How we function within those changing systems can impact us both emotionally and energetically. We may experience signs of depression, anxiety or suffer from mood changes. Your personal, individual counseling goals are key to this shared journey.

Whether you are dealing with feeling stressed, alone, depressed, anxious, addicted, disconnected, or struggling within your relationship, it can change! A healthy integration of mind, brain and relationships enable you to feel open, connected, engaged, harmonious, compassionate, and energized.
Do you ever wonder, despite all your knowledge and efforts for growth that you still end up in a pattern of doing the same thing over and over again? Well, it's not your fault and there is a way to change it. When we are free to truly see and understand the connection to our brain, body, mind, and relationships, we can actually rewire our brains to build new neural pathways for new ways of thinking and being. Most of what we do, we have no idea why we do it; almost 85% is not on a conscious level.

From struggling to THRIVING. Become more fully "yourself." Enjoy relationship satisfaction. Strengthen connection to something bigger that is meaningful. Get relief from depression and anxiety (really!). Improve effectiveness at work. Feel more at home in your body, content. Mindful and present. LAUGH. Choosing a therapist that is both really good AND a great fit is important. There is a difference here you will experience from the get go. The office is in a 1930's Cape Cod style house...inviting & comfortable. With warmth and character. David is unusually relational and "real." Sessions are 60, 75 or 90 minutes rather than 50.

For me the heart of the work involves helping you more effectively work through and control painful and sometimes chronic feelings of depression, anxiety sadness and/or anger as well as repetitive behaviors that are dysfunctional including conflicts in relationships.
People come to see me because they are experiencing psychological distress and/or interpersonal difficulties. The in-depth look at these issues not only leads to symptom relief but to longterm change of dysfunctional and painful (sometimes unconscious) ways we may perceive and judge ourselves and to recognize and build on strengths. I enjoy being a psychotherapist in part because it is satisfying and exciting to see people become more insightful, effective and confident in each of the important areas of their lives. I have been doing this work for 35+ years and plan to continue for many years.

I strive to create a warm and inviting relationship with my clients so that everyone in the room feels comfortable with being vulnerable. That takes patience and a delicate touch, but it is worth it! I would love to help you recognize your blind spots that might be inhibiting your growth.

I am experienced working with depression, anxiety, and other mental health diagnoses, but I never see my clients as simply a diagnosis.
I help people access greater psychological and emotional wellness by working through trauma, unhealthy relational patterns, and old beliefs. If you find that family or romantic relationships are difficult, you are socially isolated, your career or school performance is suffering, or you struggle with anxiety, depression or loss, therapy can help. Our work together can allow you to cultivate deeper self-understanding and acceptance, which are the stepping-stones to a more vital, engaged, and fulfilling life.

It's not about forcing yourself to change, but rather accepting yourself as you are, and then exploring. I can help you do this. I support people experiencing post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns, as they rediscover their own powerful wisdom and learn to trust themselves. In particular, I often support people in building self-esteem, overcoming social anxiety, creating stronger boundaries, creating the relationships they want, and giving themselves permission to be who they truly are.

Trying to be a happy, healthy, creative human in today’s world requires new skills to face new challenges. Overwhelming anxiety, depression, and relationship instability are often products of our ancient nervous system struggling to adapt to an environment with new rules, new pressures, and old wounds. As a species we are subjected to increasing pressure to perform, produce, and project a life that is at once effortless and perfect. The reality is far from this however, and humans need support, love, and patience in the face of failure in order to thrive.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
