My areas of specialty include anxiety, depression, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse.
Welcome! I am a NJ licensed psychotherapist with 20+ years of experience assisting individuals with a wide array of issues. Are you experiencing the discomfort of severe anxiety, general sadness, frustration, disappointment, or low self-esteem? It can be difficult to resolve issues on our own because we sometimes lack the objectivity, insight, and strategies needed to make change happen or just to feel better.

Your teen is going through a difficult time in their life. Teenage years are filled with self doubt, questioning identity, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, relationship problems, family conflict, and school difficulties. A lot of teens keep their feelings and issues inside. It is normal for them to start to share less with their parents. Therapy can help your teen to open up to a professional about the issues they are experiencing and to process their feelings better so that they can feel their best. As a teen therapist, I build rapport rapidly with teens and they enjoy having a safe place to talk about their problems.

I have experience supporting people through a number of challenges including anxiety, chronic illness, insomnia, depression, grief, life transitions, trauma, substance use, personal growth, and navigating relationships.
Sometimes it feels like we're moving through life on auto-pilot. With work and other stressors, it is hard to find time to slow down, to breathe, to focus on the present. I believe therapy is about letting go of the things we are trying to control and making choices towards a more fulfilling life. To facilitate this, I help clients openly face life’s challenges and create lasting changes. I offer a collaborative, non-judgmental, and safe space for my clients to facilitate behavior change and self-exploration.

While I treat children, I also specialize in helping adults & families with anxiety, depression, life changes, relationship issues, and communication.
Children today are facing more challenges than ever. The demands of school, friendships, social media, and life changes can take a toll on mental health. You might be seeing changes in your child or teen like irritability, worry, sadness, lack of motivation, and aggression. Parenting can be overwhelming and you are yearning for your child's success. Children and teens might be feeling misunderstood; trust could be broken, and the family dynamic could be shaken up. Our goal is to improve your child’s emotional well-being by increasing their coping skills in all aspects of life while also providing support for you as the parent.

There are circumstances in life that may trigger such negative feelings that we can barely stay afloat and function. During such times, we may feel stuck, realizing that all the resources that worked for us in the past do not work anymore. At other times, we may feel okay yet not fully satisfied with our present lives; we may want more but do not know what. I’m here to help you make that journey from surviving to thriving. I combine psychotherapy, coaching, and education. With my husband Michael we also offer Couple to Couple Coaching, drawing from our own professional training and life experiences to help other couples.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
