We all have things in our lives that we want to change, making adjustments starts to happen when we feel we are listened to, cared about and respected. Having a safe place to look at our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and habits in a non-judgmental therapeutic relationship can help us start this journey. I can offer you my years of experience and education to help you begin or even continue your growth. My approach to therapy is to build a relationship with you and get to know what things you like (strengths based) and also what things you want to change.

Caseload Full. Are you looking for a better way? As we work together, you can optimize the strengths you already possess, develop insight, and learn techniques that can help you heal yourself and nurture your relationships. The goal of therapy is to begin to see yourself and others in new and more productive ways. I enjoy working with adults, couples, and teens (from the age of 15) of all backgrounds, sexual orientations, and interests. Often, work with teens will include some level of interaction with caregivers so that constructive adjustments can be made and sustained.

Life is full of chaos and uncertainty right now. It may have brought you stress, anxiety, worries, sadness or grief. You may have had to deal with many life changes, some that you want and some that you don't. It makes sense to feel off, overwhelmed, and like you lost your footing. Wouldn't it be great to take a moment to breathe, regroup and learn how to adapt to life’s challenges? Clients come to me to feel seen, heard and sort through what is happening for them. They have overcome challenges in life and now want to find peace and healing. They want to be confident, calm, and true to themselves.

Did you know that therapy is a vehicle for you to feel safe enough to be present with yourself? How many times do we keep ourselves busy because we do not want to feel the emotions bubbling underneath the surface. Well, here is your chance to feel safe in your therapy sessions to go "there" so you can be at peace with yourself everyday. Neuroscience and Polyvagal Theory tell us that when we have believed negative thoughts about ourselves, we are not using the full circuitry available to us in our brains. This is revolutionary because when you are feeling calm and safe, you can access the fullness of who you are.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
