Or maybe you're in a relationship where you're just not connecting.
Does this describe you? You're a people pleaser, wanting to make everyone happy but yourself. You feel the pain of break-ups and grief very intensely. You are fiercely independent and hate taking help from others. Being placed for adoption can reverberate through all aspects of your life. I help clients grieving the losses associated with adoption; transracial adoptees dealing with identity issues; and adoptees working through all of the complex emotions related to search and reunion. As an adoptee myself, I "get it". I also work with the other sides of the adoption triad: birthparents and adoptive parents.

Not accepting new clients
You may feel ambivalent about starting a new relationship, whether this is your first time seeking a therapist, or perhaps you've seen many therapists without having success achieving your goals.
If you ventured onto this site, I imagine you may be dealing with a stressor that is overwhelming. You took the first important step towards getting help, and that is great. I am a licensed clinical therapist with 17 years of experience working with individuals that are dealing with a variety of circumstances, including mental health issues, life transitions, and difficulty managing stress. The most important thing to me is understanding your particular situation, how you are experiencing life, and working together to teach you tools and techniques you can use to instill hope, peace of mind, and life satisfaction.

Within each one of us is an inner child that holds the many hurts of our life. To survive this world, we hide the child away, building strong brick walls, preventing the child from emerging. Sometimes we use our “busyness” to ignore the cries of the child behind the barricades. Or we turn to anger, addiction and numbness to drown out the deafening cries. In our moments of brokenness, we stop and wonder, “Is this how I will have to live the rest of my life?” Trauma touches us all in different ways. The role of a therapist is to guide you through the pain and hurt so you can live a life of intention, meaning and inner peace.

Painful feelings of anger, fear, loneliness, despair, feelings of worthlessness, addiction and loss are welcomed in a caring sensitive and protective relationship.
Experiencing personal difficulties that feel difficult to resolve on our own are a common problem that can be resolved with help of an experienced therapist. Issues related to trauma, early life experiences, troubled relationships, self esteem, anxiety and depression can be dealt with in a safe and discreet manner. They say time heals everything but that is a misconception. It requires the assistance and direction of an knowledgeable well trained individual. Finding the right therapist is the only way to care for oneself in order to be able to meet one's goals and live a more settled happy life.

While therapy provides individuals with tools to approach their difficulties, I find that building a trusting therapeutic relationship is the most helpful.
Lets face it, life happens and feeling "crazy," is often the result of the situations we find outselves in! In my practice I focus on treating individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and relationship difficulties, among other issues that impact the way we function in our daily lives. I approach treatment by understanding what events led to the "craziness" and work with individuals to adjust the ways in which they view and respond to situations contributing to the madness. As a result, clients often develop a view of themselves, others, and the future that is more functional.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
