I treat people from diverse backgrounds, including many physicians and mental health practitioners, for a wide variety of matters including anxiety, depression, sexual difficulties, relationship problems, postpartum reactions, parenting problems, etc.
Before consulting a professional, most people have already addressed their difficulties as well as they can – but they can only deal with what they know. What they typically need help with is the parts of their struggles they are not aware of. The treatments that help most to bring hidden matters to light, and under conscious control, are based on psychoanalytic principles. As a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, I try to understand people from multiple points of view. I work with my patients to help them get as clear and comprehensive a picture as possible.

In the safety of the therapeutic relationship , space emerges to do the deeper work where meaningful and lasting change is possible.
We understand that life's struggles can present in many different ways and that everyone has a unique story that deserves to be heard. Our focus is on building a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be seen, accepted, and helped to better understand yourself, how you got to where you are, how to heal what needs to be healed, and how to get to a better place. We want to help people better cope with the present, understand their past, improve their relationship with themselves and with others, and to grow into the most authentic person they can be. Sometimes this work can feel hard, and we can walk with you and support you.

I have worked with individuals and couples struggling with Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Adjustment Disorders, ADD, ADHD, Marital Conflict, issues surrounding substance abuse, and issues surrounding gender and identity.
Through my experiences as a therapist, I have seen how life stressors, past experiences, and genetics can all play a role in the difficulties of our lives. My hope is that we can create a safe environment to enable you to grow and adapt to what life has to offer and start to explore the things that may be holding us back.

Healing happens relationally–within our communities, our families, and within ourselves. Therapy works best if we can build a safe and trusting relationship , so you should know a little bit about who I am! I am a white, queer and trans femme musician turned therapist. I am areligious, but I find many experiences to be deeply spiritual, including cooking, being in community with others, singing together, and walking in nature. Folks who do well with me don't fit the status quo, are navigating transitions, are noticing patterns in their relationships they want to examine and change, and are in search of healing and transformation.

Whether it's the dissolution of your most important relationship , or you're experiencing some other slow-motion car crash, the pull toward isolation is almost inevitable, and profoundly dangerous.
So, you're getting divorced. First, I'm sorry you're going through this, or any other upsetting and life-altering experience, including job loss, grief, or litigation, among others. I'm sure getting to this point has been no fun at all. And now comes the hard part: hanging onto yourself while your life gets rearranged.

I believe we all carry a wealth of past experiences, and that this often involves old or unhealed wounds. Sometimes this presents as feelings of disconnection, depression, racing thoughts or anxiety, sometimes as substance use, self-harming behavior, or relationship problems. Wherever you are at, I will work to build a relationship together which we can use to explore your life and where you are now with the goal of moving forward and growing in whatever ways you want. The therapist-client relationship is something I value deeply.

The decision to seek treatment and find the right therapist can be anxiety inducing. In fact, many times the journey stops here for those who might not be ready to take the next step. I know that being vulnerable with a stranger is uncomfortable and may be difficult when first beginning your therapeutic journey. However, my hope is that I can assist you in taking small steps towards building a trusting relationship together and reaching your therapeutic goals. Together, we can reflect upon what you’re needing from yourself, your relationships, and your environment and what changes can be made to enhance your overall quality of life.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
