Whether individual or couples counseling , I provide a holistic approach to your treatment that embodies your emotional and psychological growth.
For many women who are considering therapy, it's not easy taking the first step. You may have felt the weight of carrying your issues on your own for so long and have no idea where to begin. You may have sought therapy previously and felt your issues were being minimized, your "voice" was not being heard by your provider, or you were unable to maintain a sense of authenticity due to significant cultural barriers. If you can identify with either of these scenarios, I created Monroe Clinical Counseling for women like you. In this space, your truth, your voice, and your authenticity are valued. You are priority.

I am trained as an emotion-focused couples therapist which uses attachment as a means to build understanding, empathy, and connection between two individuals who are seeking to rebuild their relationship , whether that be romantic, family ect.
The truth will set you free"... I became a therapist because I believe that through relationship , listening, and talking, a tremendous amount of healing can take place in a person's life. I believe in people and the potential for change and growth in their lives. I see therapy as a partnership in facilitating that change. I help people to free themselves from various things that hold them down, guilt, anger, shame, addictions, anxiety... I attempt to help people establish a more solid foundation of self worth, balance, love and flexibility to be able to negotiate the world, their relationships and themselves more successfully.

I focus on anxiety, family relationship distress/confIict, trauma, people-pleasing, and self-esteem concerns.
Now accepting clients! My clients are burned-out peacemakers suffering from anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues. They put others before themselves and struggle to set boundaries. Many had difficult childhoods where their emotional needs weren't fully met and may struggle with ongoing difficult family relationships. They may have a history of childhood trauma, which we address with EMDR. Our work is a process of learning who they are, what they need, and undoing the unhealthy patterns that keep them trapped. I provide virtual individual, family, and EMDR therapy.

Effective therapy happens with a strong therapeutic relationship between client and therapist.
As a therapist I meet you where you are in life and join with you for a time on your journey to self-improvement. On this journey, it is so important to feel heard. Therapy is about being heard and empowering you to use your voice to be the person you want to be and to lead the life you want to lead. I listen deeply as we work together to identify and meet your therapeutic goals. I believe the environment is a part of the whole person that impacts one’s emotional, mental and physical well-being and needs to be considered in therapy. I invite your feedback regarding what is working and not working for you in our therapy sessions.

I particularly enjoy working with individuals who are navigating eating disorders, relationship issues, and expected and unexpected transitions.
People choose to enter therapy for a variety of reasons. Some are driven to therapy by a desire for self understanding, while others seek it out because they feel defeated and overwhelmed. In any case, in my experience, those who willingly enter into therapy will be helped by the process. I listen with an open mind and work collaboratively with clients to address symptoms and enhance self-understanding. My approach is psychodynamic, which means I prioritize equal understanding of your current life, your personal history, and your internal experience.

I support clients who want to work on increasing awareness as well as managing concerns related to: emotions, communication skills, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief, psychosis, addiction, and self-worth.
Therapy is a process in which we can experience being seen and heard without judgment, no matter the struggles we confront. Creating a safe space is my first and most essential aim in therapy. I want clients to know this is the space where they can talk, cry, explore, reflect and dig around in their thoughts, feelings and experiences without judgment.

My individual and couples work is informed by psychodynamic, relational, and trauma-focused modalities, with a focus on topics surrounding anxiety & depression, relationships, sex, sexuality, gender identity, and substance use.
My ten years of experience working with LGBTQ people and clients of various backgrounds in mental health settings has shown me that personal change occurs best through relationships based on trust, and a common purpose. Relationships where you are encouraged to say what’s on your mind, be challenged, take risks, and gain new insights. In our sessions, I will focus on honoring your autonomy as we work towards your goals for therapy. My intention is not to teach you a “correct way to live" but instead to learn what already works for you and help create a space to explore yourself further leading to new possibilities for your life.

I also provide supportive counseling for individuals and couples to resolve personal or work related concerns, make decisions, or clarify life events.
You can't stop doing what you're doing, and it's really about to seriously disrupt your life? Locked in to persistent, compulsive actions that you don't quit, but also don't leave you satisfied? Disturbances of the inner self can interfere with joy and satisfaction in living. Sometimes experiences of frustration, anger, disappointment, sorrow and loss become repetitious, even predictable. It's time to do something.

Some things are difficult to think about and even harder to talk about. Perhaps you are experiencing depression or anxiety, dissatisfaction in a relationship or career, or struggling with substance abuse/misuse or self-sabotaging behaviors. These are just some of the many reasons that one might find themselves seeking help from a therapist. When one makes the decision to seek help it is the courageous first step in the journey to self-awareness and a more fulfilling life. Very simply, my role as a therapist is to help you begin the transformative journey of uncovering limiting beliefs that are obstacles to emotional wellness.

I believe that when we're honest about the causes of suffering, space opens up to be creative in making our lives closer to something we really want. I see myself as your partner in rigorously confronting what is true in your life, and finding space to make real change. It is very important to me to be affirming of all genders and expressions, and to be an active anti-racist ally.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
