You feel stuck but need more than just “talk” or a “safe space.” You’ve had great supportive talk therapy, but felt that you ultimately didn’t receive the tangible skills needed to address ANXIETY or OCD. I hope to provide clear insight and actionable steps to spark real change inside and outside the therapy room if intrusive worries or repetitive behaviors are overwhelming you - or if Anxiety is taking up time and energy from your life – or if sleepless nights are disrupting your days.

Do you somehow feel like you just don't fit into your life? People I work with often feel like misfits, even though - from the outside - they may appear to be doing just fine. I help people see through their trances of unworthiness, shame, distrust, and inferiority. These trances often stem from identifying with outdated stories from the past; stories that often have deep roots in the mind, heart, body, and spirit, which take time to unearth and unravel. I offer a safe, sacred space where these stories and early traumas - that are showing up today as persistent "problems"- can be explored, understood, and ultimately released.

Are you feeling disconnected, stressed, stuck, scared, or angry? Are you repeating relationships, patterns, or situations and wishing you could break the cycle? Maybe life feels more frustrating or stressful than usual. Sometimes we aren't sure what causes our distress, but we know we're not reaching our potential for health, happiness, or success. And even if we know what the issue is, change can feel impossible. That's where our team of qualified professionals can help. Our job isn't to judge you or your choices, it's to help you understand the root causes of your issues and work together to create a custom plan for change.

I help individuals and couples move from a state of psychological distress, conflict, or plateauing to a healthier way of being.
I'm a Licensed Psychotherapist and a Spiritual and Life Coach. My approach to therapy is holistic and developmentally based. I see a person as a whole rather than just the current symptoms or problem. I paid attention to attachment patterns, differentiation, integration, and the competencies proper of the adult age. And I use a myriad of interventions and techniques from a rich arsenal of therapeutic tools to help people improve their lives and relationships.

Much of my background is in working with people who have experienced sexualized and/or interpersonal violence, are coping with health conditions (chronic pain, HIV, reproductive issues), have been incarcerated, are healthcare professionals (physicians, residents, nurses), are LGBTQ+, as well as couples (of all orientations and relationship structures).
Hi there, I'm Dr. Marina Costanzo. It can be intimidating to enter (or re-enter) therapy with someone new, and face areas of our lives that we’ve been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, shameful, stressed, or fearful about. I have a warm and non-judgmental approach to therapy, and hope to facilitate compassion, engagement, and empowerment. I will collaborate with you to provide effective tools for coping in the present, opportunities to safely explore the past, and to build hope, satisfaction, and joy for your future. I value working with clients facing all kinds of difficulties, from everyday stressors to larger concerns.

In addition to what is listed, I provide treatment in the following specialized areas: combat trauma; reunification of families after traumatic separation; couples with nontraditional lifestyles; and high profile individuals and/or their partners.
You engage in therapy because there is something in your life that isn't working. My genuine curiosity leads me to explore not just what isn’t working, but what has led up to where you are today and what we need to do to move forward with real and lasting change. I am a warm, kind and compassionate therapist but I will also challenge you when appropriate and ask you to consider new perspectives and ideas as we pursue your goals.

I work with individual adults, couples, and families using an integrative, strength-based, culturally aware approach.
As a therapist, I am committed to empowering clients to live their best life, have meaningful and loving relationships, and most importantly, in the words of Virginia Satir, "help them have stars in their eyes and truly feel their own value." At times, as we move through the different stages of our life, we find ourselves stuck due to our unproductive internal dialogue of shame and guilt, the need to be perfect, and the daily attempts to be who the rest of the world wants us to be. This leads us to feeling broken and unable to love ourselves or truly connect with others.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
