What is it for you...Is it the lack of motivation? The over-thinking? The never feeling good enough or need to be perfect? The “I don’t know who I am?” The loss of identity? The failed or lack of relationship/s? The hopelessness? The unexplained sadness? The lack of support? School Stress? Well sometimes growing up or even life can be very overwhelming and the desperation to feel better as you navigate through can leave you feeling stuck and lost on your next decision/move.

I enjoy working with individuals who seek to live happier, healthier lives and recognize that change can only happen by trying something new. Each of us has the power to create better lives for ourselves simply by changing the way we relate to ourselves. Many people never learned as children how to cope with stress and negative emotion. But this is a skill that can be learned in adulthood and that can pave the way for greater happiness throughout our lives. The ultimate goal is to prioritize your well-being and care for yourself by noticing and responding to your thoughts and feelings with compassion and validation.

I am passionate about creating an open environment for people to explore, understand, and communicate about their thoughts, feelings, wants and needs. I believe that as one is able to learn their authentic self, they become able to embrace true identity, transform boundaries, and connect to themselves and others more fully. I enjoy helping others explore how thought, lived experiences (familial, cultural, societal influences), and behavior patterns impact daily life, self concept, connection, and achievement.

I find that many people have dealt with so much trauma and disappointment in life that they begin to feel powerless. The way out isn’t necessarily to fix all the problems in your life, but to learn how to respond differently to them, as your capable self. You might wonder what your life purpose really is, or feel as if you’re stuck in the same cycle. Many of my clients have described feeling overwhelmed by the never-ending pressures of life. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to see a new path. I help people get out of unhelpful patterns, so they can pursue their true purpose, no matter what’s happening around them.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
