Over the past 30 years, I've worked as a family therapist, school counselor, crisis counselor, and hospital based social worker.
Therapy is a supportive place for you to investigate your inner world with compassion and curiosity. I'll work with you to develop inner resources so that you can live from your self energy which is calm, creative and intentional. I will support you in gaining insights and developing tools to heal any reactivity, shame, anxiety or hopelessness you've been carrying. You'll learn research-based practices that can improve your mood, your sense of self, and your relationships. Therapy practices I utilize include Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, and Gottman Relationship Practices.

I use Internal Family Systems therapy to help you recognize the parts that keeps you stuck and help you develop the awareness you need to break free from these patterns that no longer work for you.
Not every day is bad, but you're tired - tired of feeling stuck in the same recurring patterns and not knowing the way out. Sometimes, you feel anxious and worried "for no reason." You find yourself feeling obligated to say yes when you really mean no. You feel like you have to change yourself to fit in with the people around you or else you won't be accepted. The roller coaster of emotions becomes so overwhelming the only way to relax is through scrolling, substances, or Netflix, but you feel worse later. You worry there is something wrong with you but hope that there is relief from your anxiety and pain.

As a Psychologist, I am trained to work with various issues related to well-being and distress. A few of my specialty areas include trauma, sexual concerns, depression, anxiety, relational work, infertility concerns and perinatal/postpartum depression and working with therapists. Overall, my approach is holistic and relational; I give the utmost attention to the therapeutic relationship as well as how people relate to others in their lives.

The decision to seek counseling is a life altering one. It is a commitment of time, energy and money. Therefore, finding a counselor that you can make a connection with is very important. With 19+ years of experience, my unique approach to individual counseling is to treat the whole person. A healthy self is made up of physical, emotional and spiritual components. All of which need nurturing to feel happy and fulfilled. My approach to couples counseling is to treat each of the components of the relationship. The you, the partner, the relationship. In that process, my role is to be on the side of the relationship.

Inspired by the mind-body-spirit guidance I have received on my own healing journey, I offer a holistic approach towards healing for women struggling with anxiety, trauma (including childhood sexual abuse), substance use, relationships, loss/grief, PMDD, learning differences, and the needs of the empath/highly sensitive person. As an empath/highly sensitive person myself, a warm, genuine, non-judgmental, loving energy is of utmost importance for us sensitive (or in-tune) folks when entering the vulnerable space of therapeutic work. I support women navigate this beautiful and challenging trait so they can protect their peace.

I enjoy working with adults and families who desire change, but aren't sure how to make it happen. For some, it means a change in relationship dynamics or parenting style. For others, it means collaborating on complicated life issues, such as difficult teenagers, substance abuse, or co-parenting. If you are looking to leave a long marriage, I can help you navigate that process. I also enjoy working with individuals in their 20's and 30's trying to figure out this thing called adulting. I split my time between Steamboat Springs,CO and northern California, and am licensed to see clients in California, Colorado and Utah.

I am a Child and Family Therapist specializing in giftedness and the mother of two gifted children.
There are children in this world who experience life with great intensity, complexity and depth. They are highly intuitive, anxious, sensitive and have a strong sense of justice. Some of them are identified as gifted through the education system. When the inner world of these children collides with the realities of our external world, it often creates a firestorm of thoughts, emotions and behaviors that can be very difficult to manage. They are in need of guidance to gain a better understanding of their experiences and learn how to harness them for growth.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
