A former professor of mine once described the profession of social work as the “alleviation of suffering.” I acknowledge that when you take a step toward seeking help you are most likely experiencing some form of pain or distress. I also acknowledge that other variables come into view when examining mental health, such as environmental factors, marginalization, and stigma. I aim to approach your care with an empathic consideration of these factors. Thus, I am tasked with assisting and collaborating with you towards a greater sense of ease and comfort.

Hello. I'm Bradly Long, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. From personal and professional experiences, I believe in a psychodynamic approach to learning about ourselves and where we come from while also improving upon our daily functioning. We are all works in progress. From my personal therapeutic experience as a client and then as a therapist, my focus is exploring and learning where we come from. What were we taught? I'm most comfortable with clients who aren't afraid of confronting what isn't working for them and talking about the elephant in the room.

I have over 25 years of therapy and supervisory experience with a variety of populations and have treated many hundreds of people with anxiety, mood disorders, anger problems, PTSD and grief issues.
The issue we all struggle with is how to remain present when our minds constantly are driven to anticipate and control an unmanageable future and keep a tight grip on an unbearable past (so that we are not overcome by it). When this dilemma becomes too much we lose trust, faith, and the use of intuition and begin to operate on fear, shame, and anger. This pattern is altered through someone making a “leap of faith” and trusting that someone can understand and see things through their eyes. This is what I consider to be the heart of my work and it typically means that change is happening before any other “intervention”.

Sometimes, it is challenging to accept that we need help. This is true for most physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers. The self-sacrifice required often leads to professionals putting their own needs last, with the stigma surrounding seeking mental and emotional help within the field only exacerbating the issue. Moreover, patients are difficult to please and don't accept any mistakes. As a result, healthcare workers are exposed to burnout, depression, anxiety, and in extreme cases, suicidal ideas—a perfect mix to develop problems with emotional partners and children. However, help is here...

The first half of a person's lifespan, depending on their cultural background and societal rules tend to follow collective norms. However, during the transition into second life (JUNG, 1919) an individual experiences the limits of their origin. My hope is for you to forgive what has occurred through reflection and welcome what is coming through acceptance.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
