In therapy, I use an assimilative-integrative approach to best meet the unique needs of my clients. My approach emphasizes a client-centered, but systemic orientation. I use evidence-based treatments that are informed by cognitive- behavioral, developmental, and relational/attachment theories. I work to build open and warm relationships with my clients and I honor the ways in which one's background and culture inform our work. Therapy is a collaborative process meant to foster positive change as my clients and families develop more compassion for themselves and one another.

Cognitive- Behavioral Therapy (CBT) believes that how you think determines how you feel and act when a situation with your spouse, child, friend or co-worker arises.
I am a professor (University of Illinois, currently: Georgetown Medical School) and in private practice. As a teacher of tools, skills and strategies, my clients quickly learn new, more effective behaviors to reduce discomfort and be more successful. My approach is not so much placing a label on people but in offering ideas for what they can DO NOW and in the future to learn and implement new successful behaviors. I enjoy working with mood, anxiety, anger and behavioral problems for all the ages. My approach is pragmatic, behavioral and usually is short-term to achieve well-defined results.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist working with couples, adults, and families. It is my belief that a warm and compassionate environment in therapy, in conjunction with problem solving and a growth-oriented attitude lead to better quality of life. The goal is to understand the thought and behavior patterns that can damage one's happiness and create problems in relating to others; and to replace them with healthier ones. My therapy services address issues ranging from stress and anxiety to depression, anger, relationship and communication problems, self-esteem, identity, and grief/loss.

Our approach in treatment is for the client to begin a cognitive awareness of the patterns of thinking and feeling affecting behavior.
We all need help at times to understand our feelings. Mindfulness-based therapy facilitates awareness, insight and the ability to plow into inner wisdom to heal self and reach one's full potential. Mindfulness experience increases an inner peace that remains present through life's challenges. The ability to facilitate change requires first acceptance of feelings, and thoughts. Mindfulness and compassion then facilitates change and new behaviors begin to emerge. The benefits include no longer being afraid, angry or anxious, life-skills improve resulting in a better understanding of goals and values and thus growth as an individual.

Craig is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Trauma focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, DBT prolonged Exposure, Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), the Gottman Method and offers parent coaching for parents with anxious children.
Clients can experience a life situation or a series of life situations that cause some level of unwanted emotional arousal (sadness, hurt, pain, fear, anxiety) and as a result of the intensity, increases an urge to do a behavior they consider ineffective (self harm, suicidal behavior, isolate, withdrawal, shutdown, verbally/physically aggressive, tantrums, obsessions, compulsions, avoidance, school refusal). They are in need of skills to help them cope with their emotions and problem solve their life situations. Despite the discomfort, they want to be effective, maintain relationships and feel better.

I utilize psychodynamic, cognitive- behavioral, and mindfulness techniques to help clients develop resilience, insights, and healthier lives.
So many of us present a high-functioning face to the world, but our inner lives tell a different story. Depression, anxiety, and other issues are natural byproducts of the stressful lives we lead. I work with adults, teens (16 and older), couples, and families, ranging from adolescents facing developmental struggles to stay-at-home parents and Beltway professionals. As a native Northern Virginian, I can relate to the challenges of living in this frenetic environment. My previous military and consulting experience give me an understanding of issues that busy professionals deal with like self-care and work-life balance.

It's rewarding to see people move from awareness to insight to behavioral change to meaning making.
My practice is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where we examine how thoughts, feelings and behaviors all connect helping us to see core beliefs that may not be serving us. This leads to identifying and changing behavior patterns that are not working- ones that may ultimately hold you back from experiencing more fulfilling relationships and a more meaningful life. These powerful tools can be of great help in this important work.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
