I've seen lives change and hearts heal. I can help you control persistent, painful conflicts that may leave you feeling anxious, angry, lonely, and sad. It is possible to find understanding, direction, and strengths. One of the most challenging circumstances encountered in life involves the loss of a person, an ideal, your self-image, or your future. I utilize insight-oriented therapy as well as cognitive-behavioral treatment, as needed.

Each one of us experiences challenges, hardships and pain in our life. Whether it is difficulties with relationships, family, children, work or our life stage that is troubling us. We can become bound in our past and present issues. We can feel that we are alone. However difficult our life may be, it is by seeking and desiring peace that change can happen. Therapy is where this process of change and where the work begins. It is in this therapeutic relationship that you can learn to navigate through your struggles and get to a better place in life.

I believe that therapy is not a "one size fits all". I will work with you to tailor an approach to what best suits your needs. I work with both individuals, and couples to explore their goals for therapy and create a warm, empathic and open environment for the client to feel comfortable with sharing about their experiences. Often, we feel "stuck" on our path, and are unsure why. With patience, rapport building, trust and empathy we can work together to help you explore many facets of your life. I hope to help you grow and learn from your past, become more present and in the moment, and look forward to your future.

I believe therapeutic change and progress evolve through the combination of a non-judgmental, insight oriented approach and the development of a therapeutic relationship. With self understanding we gain insight into repetitive cycles that often contribute to sadness, anxiety, and relationship conflicts. In my work with clients I place emphasis on the strength of the intuitive, centered self. Throughout my training and postdoctoral work, I have had the privilege to gain experience in a variety of settings ranging from private practice, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, a residential treatment center, and outpatient clinics.

The divide between what we hope for in our closest relationships, and what we experience, can be wide. If our hopes for ourselves and those we love most could carry us through, there would be no need for couples/family therapy. But the demands of daily life conspire with old fears; with gaps in relationship modeling in our growing-up years; and with life events beyond our control to increase tensions, and undermine communication and connection. Judgment and anger do not have to crowd out collaboration towards mutual goals. Choosing couples/family therapy is a step away from isolation and towards the life your family envisions.

Making that first phone call to a therapist can be difficult. But the decision to seek mental health treatment is a positive step toward improving emotional health and overall quality of life. Daily life is hectic and it can be hard to find time for self-care. Often, so much time and energy is spent on meeting the needs of others that it's easy to feel lost in the shuffle. Psychotherapy provides a unique opportunity to disengage from the stress of every day living and shift your focus back onto your own emotional needs.

The foundation of my therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but I also incorporate other methodologies to meet the needs of each unique individual. My approach as a therapist is flexible because I understand the importance of your individuality. My goal is for my clients to feel safe and comfortable when they start therapy whether it be their first time or they have had past experiences. My style is to be interactive and engage with my clients while providing an environment that is safe, non-judgmental and supportive. I sometimes use worksheets, recommend books and phone apps to support the work we do together.

Every person deserves to be heard, understood, and recognized for their unique qualities; that wonderful feeling of relief when someone finally understands you, empathizes with you, and just “gets you” is truly incomparable. I truly believe that more important than any skill or technique I've learned is the importance of the relationship between my client and myself. My clients will have a space where they can be themselves and will begin the process of understanding, accepting, and valuing themselves.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
