I'm a first-generation South Asian-American art therapist & counselor who holds space for creative expression and healing through a collaborative, anti-oppressive, and affirming lens. I work to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and comforting space for my clients. In this space, we can explore feelings, tap into curiosities, ask questions, share experiences, laugh, cry, and celebrate successes, big or small. Although therapy is an experience that the client and therapist embark on together, I believe that each client has the ability to harness their strengths to find a path that gives them meaning and purpose.

I know that life is full of ups and downs and that the path to healing is not linear. Together, we’ll work on deepening your understanding of who you are while developing clarity of who you want to surround yourself with on your journey. My goal is to help you heal, confront your past, and empower you to reclaim your story. My own story as a South Asian woman, has built an understanding of the challenges that can come with our identities especially when balancing societal pressures and family expectations. I am experienced in supporting those facing depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief, trauma, and identity issues.

I'm a Taiwanese/Chinese second-generation immigrant who grew up in the Midwest. Born to first-generation immigrants, I've witnessed the ways my parents’ migration experiences and has worked to understand and break cycles of generational trauma. I've dealt with the forces of assimilation, gendered and racialized identity formation, and the need to establish a sense of belonging within an immigrant family surrounded by predominantly Christian, white communities. I've worked with individuals/couples that are challenged by anxiety, trauma, depression, stress, family/relationship conflicts, racial/sexual identities, LGBTQ+ issues, etc.

As a Clinical Therapist, I treat children, teenagers, and adults; women; immigration/new comers; clients with disabilities; vulnerable coping skills; self-esteem issues; depression and anxiety, etc. By working with various groups of clients and families in different communities, I sharpened my counseling skills in enhancing self-awareness, assisting in life transition, re-configuring family system, and building up better interpersonal relationships.

The world today is so loud with everything and everyone buzzing in your ear telling you how to live your life or how you are "doing things wrong". You care so much about others' needs and wants that maybe you forget your own. Or that you have a voice. Or that you can take up space. Your emotions may feel out of control which may make you feel not like yourself. "What's wrong with me?" you might ask. I want to help you create a quiet space for reflection on what YOU want your life to be like. Giving you permission to fully be un-apologetically you.

Our life's work is helping clients achieve a better sense of self and happiness...more recently we've recognized that without good mental health providers, finding this balance in life can be more difficult and stressful. As a result, we tend toward an Integrative approach and help our clients transform into the people they want to be. We see each client as an individual with many parts to their identity. Utilizing a holistic and systemic approach we help clients reintegrate the parts of themselves to function better as individuals and within their systems. Our focus tends toward a systems based approach using behavior methods.

As a first generation Asian American woman, I believe in the importance of cultural humility, anti-racism, and gender affirmation in my practice, paying attention to power structures and systems that affect us all. I view clients as equals, where social hierarchies and identities are addressed to practice true cultural humility and understanding. Using the power of art as a tool of justice and healing to create opportunities for inclusion and human connection, each individual’s human potential will be supported, regardless of identity or ability.

We each come to therapy for different reasons, but in my experience, it usually has to do with a growing awareness that there’s something standing in the way of our ability to be who we want to be. Sometimes it’s not clear what the obstacle is or even what exactly we are striving for. I believe deeply that therapy can be transformative, and research tells us that the best therapeutic work is compassionate, intentional, and fundamentally collaborative.

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
