I use an integrative and collaborative psychotherapeutic approach, working to nurture the relationship between my clients and myself, with curiosity, warmth, and humor. Some people like to resolve specific issues quickly. Others prefer a slower pace and an emphasis on safety and trust. Still others are eager for in-depth, insight-oriented therapy, delving into the past, searching for new meaning and ways of being. Whatever the intensity and focus, I seek to help people find ways to help lead fuller richer lives, alleviate distress, deal with life's challenges, and improve relationships.

I help adult gay men live without fear, pain, confusion, and self-destructive behaviors. Their symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, shame, and self-loathing get in the way of the life they want to live. They worry I will judge them for how they are living their lives. However, they want to overcome their inner limitations, use of drugs, porn, "dating" apps, overachieving, and live a life with deeper connections, real freedom, and dignity.

My approach to therapy is practical With over 30 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults I focus my energy with clients on the present. I help my clients identify their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are creating difficulties for them. I will help you use skills you already have or develop new techniques for managing difficulties in your life. If issues from the past are keeping you from managing your present life we will work together to neutralize issues from the past, so you can manage current life stresses with current, more effective techniques.

Village Counseling Services provides intensive, individualized Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) treatment by maintaining a small therapist-to-client ratio and by offering DBT skills training in small groups. DBT is a highly practical, evidence-based direct form of therapy which emphasizes working toward the life you want to live by integrating acceptance and change with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and mindfulness. This approach is highly effective for those who have difficulty regulating intense emotions.

I'm huge on being radically genuine with everyone. You can be homeless and on welfare or a multi millionaire, I'll speak to you in the same manner. It makes no difference to me. & thus far that's been a huge part of my success as well as a major building block for my practice. As a result word of mouth has been good to me. So when you meet me for a session don't expect a three-piece suit or a clipboard that I will be vigorously writing on.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
