My approach supports clients to identify and challenge narratives negatively impacting their life, allowing them to uncover their path for transformation. Needing help with a particular issue or concern is not a sign of weakness. In fact, I believe that reaching out for help is actually a sign of strength! As a Clinical Social Worker for more than 30 years, I would be honored to help you move through whatever it is that is holding you back from learning who your “best self” really is.

My focus is on helping people improve themselves and help them enjoy their lives. I think sometimes to get better outcomes, if we might want to change our behaviors/thoughts/feelings. Typically I use DBT, CBT and behavioral techniques that might help us make some changes. An engaged client that puts in some effort during session and/or towards their treatment plan that usually does best. Only sees adults, over +18.

I draw on several approaches for treatment including EMDR, mindfulness-based CBT, and traditional talk therapy, tailoring my practice toward the needs of each person. I use a humanistic attachment lens informed by interpersonal neurobiology. I primarily work with people who have complex intersections of identity and those who have experienced trauma. The trauma may surface through symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or difficulty managing relationships. I work with a lot of individuals who have experienced complex trauma, developmental trauma, a single traumatic event, emotional neglect, and physical neglect.

I am passionate about supporting families (and individual adults) challenged by experiences of childhood trauma, divorce, adoption, grief, and/or other relationship ruptures.
Every parent dreams of raising their children in ways that enable them to not only survive, but to thrive. As life unfolds, parents may encounter personal difficulties, or problems related to their children, that compromise their ability to provide consistent, responsive care. They may then be susceptible to feelings of overwhelm, discouragement, and/or guilt. I accompany families, individual adults, and couples with kindness, warmth, and compassion. With a gentle but steady eye on strengths and resources, I respectfully join with them in the belief that "We are in this together, and together, we will find our way through."

I work with adolescents and adults who struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma and all members of the of adoption triad.
I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Perhaps you are wanting to discover more about who you really are. Therapy is not a one-sided conversation, with little opportunity for interaction or getting to experience each other as real people. I can assure you that I am as real as it gets! I will work with you to create a supportive relationship that will allow us to face the problems you are experiencing and create a path to healing. It is through connection and trust that healing happens.

I work mainly with women who are experiencing trauma, both physical and emotional, as well as grief and loss, adoption-related issues, and major life transitions. If you identify with any of these, chances are you're struggling with anxiety, stress, self-esteem issues, feelings of guilt and shame, depression, grief, self-doubt, or loss of identity, and possibly all of the above. Therapy can help you sort through the chaos of emotions and quiet the turmoil of your thoughts so you can find yourself again and map your path forward.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
