My practice is varied, although the focus over the years has been the LGBTQ community. I also see singles, couples and families not identified as LGBTQ. My role is to be a supportive agent, assisting the client to explore their past and present and to be more open about conflicts that are causing stress. Together, we explore the clients family history, in order to develop a deeper understanding of their present patterns and relationships. Anxiety, low self-esteem, sexuality, work problems are all examined. As a parent who has adopted, I work with families and individuals around adoption/foster care issues.

Therapy is a process that can be useful for people of any age who are facing challenges. It can be an opportunity to examine one's past experiences in order to better understand their current circumstances. I specialize in assisting adolescents with navigating the complexities of social interactions and the start of romantic relationships, as well as facing the increasing academic pressures of gaining admission into specialized high schools. I also have extensive experience addressing difficulties that arise within families, including issues related to adoption, divorce, and other relationship conflicts. I welcome clients of all ages and backgrounds.

I also have special interests in bereavement therapy, trauma, geriatric issues, college student concerns, adoption/infertility counseling, and anger management (NAMA Certified Anger Management Specialist-I),.
While change is difficult, it is never too late! My clients have ranged in age through 97. I see both individuals and families dealing with a large spectrum of emotional issues. I am warm, encouraging, a strong motivator, and honor each individual's unique characteristics and strengths. To that end, I try to tailor my methods to the individual needs of the client - utilizing psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioral therapy modes. As a feature of my practice, I make house calls to elderly or infirm clients in my local area.

One of my core values is to offer my complete presence to the other person. I believe presence is key to fostering a safe and secure environment so that mutual trust can unfold and transformative work can be done. Since 2010, I have focused my work on children and parents struggling with family life challenges including traumatic events such as divorce, loss, prenatal/birth trauma, medical procedures, adoption and attachment disruption. I am also trained in Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART), a modality that specifically helps children resolve trauma using play, movement, and sensory motor stimulation.

I am a trained family therapist and have years experience working with adolescents, especially those with foster care and adoption histories.
I believe that the therapeutic process, although painful at times, is very rewarding and that individuals can heal and have fulfilling lives from engaging in treatment. My ideal client is a person who is willing to consistently attend therapy and trust in the process. I understand that "resistance" is a necessary part of treatment and believe that trust comes when the client and therapist continue to interact with each other. Therapy can be an unique and rewarding experience; please join me on the road to discovering your authentic self.

I have experience with adoption/trauma.
Life as a neurodivergent and/or disabled person can be beautiful, wonderful, and filled with so much joy! It can also be exhausting, challenging, and involve a lot of misunderstanding from those around you. Many of us experience traumas, anxiety, depression, Autistic burnout, emotion regulation difficulties, relational difficulties, and struggles with work, school, and parenting demands. If you're looking for support in managing any of these areas, and you want to work with someone who knows how to set you up for sustainable change, you're in the right place.

Are you a queer or trans person feeling stuck or disconnected and looking for support with your relationships, sexuality, or gender? For many of us, navigating intimacy and seeking purpose in our lives can bring up the legacies of shame, estrangement, and trauma, and make us feel anxious, overwhelmed, lonely, or empty—especially in a time of increasing uncertainty, heightened injustice, and institutional failures. But as queer people we’re also highly adaptive and resilient. In my practice, I help clients build on this strength so they can brave tough moments, heal, and find a greater sense of authenticity and trust in themselves.

Destigmatizing mental health is one of the biggest challenges we face in todays society. Many individuals are reluctant to seek treatment due to fear of how they may be perceived by their family, friends, and/or any person that plays a significant role in their life. Negative thinking and negative emotions combined with daily stressors is almost certain to lead you down an unhealthy path.

I aim to guide clients to uncover and understand their truths as they share their stories. Feelings around intimacy, loss, and shame which manifest as depression and anxiety are often central themes. Couples counseling, issues relating to sex and sexuality, co-parenting, divorce, and physical illness are some of my specialties. People become stuck in self-imposed limitations and self defeating actions and self talk. In our work, you will gain new perspectives that encourage your authentic self to express itself.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
