If you are reading this, give yourself a pat on the back. It can be hard for some people to make the decision to look for a therapist and coming to this website is one of the initial steps! I view therapy as a collaborative process that is grounded in a trusting alliance between therapist and client. Therapy is a space for you to explore self-discovery, open yourself to increased self-awareness, shift troublesome thought patterns, tap into your intuition, and deepen self-acceptance. Therapy can also lead to a better understanding of your relationships with others, how you relate and what you need in your relationships.

My specialties include treatment of problems related to foster care, adoption, and family and other interpersonal relationships, issues with attachment, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Congratulations on taking the first step on your journey towards becoming a better you. Acknowledging the need to change is easy but following through is difficult. Finding the right person to help you through your journey can be draining but important in successfully accomplishing your goals. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable to another person is scary, but it is a strength that aids in the healing process. Humanistic and cognitive behavioral theories are used in an integrative approach to help understand your unique life experiences and how they have led to deficit-based feelings, emotions, and behaviors.

Psychotherapy as a vocation called me in my early 30s - a paradigm shift, resulting from a series of personal breakdowns, breakthroughs, and ultimately, personal discovery. Guided by caring therapists into a new, integrated sense of self, I realigned my passions and skills with a life purpose. In preceding Life's chapter, I studied art and design in college, and for years apprenticed under my father - the Architect, as it was decided I am to follow in his footsteps. Wanting to please, I indeed followed, yet uncovered greater fulfillment exploring the architecture of the human psyche and mind.

Through my lived experience as a transracial adoptee, I have come to understand that we are more than our families, relationships, and circumstances. Yet the ways we are connected to each of these can deeply shape how we walk through the world.

Congratulations on taking this step in seeking help and support for yourself or your family. I work with children and adolescents, families, men, and women. Many of my clients describe losing a loved one was like being hit by a Mac truck. There is something unbelievable about how a loved one is no longer with us ;it is akin to a sudden shock. The need to tell one's story and organize the narrative is essential to the process of healing. Repeating the story in front of witnesses either in a group setting or individually helps integrate this new reality into one's frame of reference. The purpose of the sessions individual or group in to help to make you feel less alone in your personal tragedy. Repeatedly group members report a sense of healing being connected to others.

Being human is a wondrous and challenging endeavor. Most of us walk around each day feeling inadequate, lost, anxious or depressed. And yet something inside us yearns for more. It takes tremendous courage to slow down and listen to this voice. To turn towards the painful feelings and try to understand them. I believe that with the right support, the hard stuff is actually the gateway to a life that is more purposeful, meaningful, integrated and peace-filled. In my office I create a warm and engaging space for clients to build self-awareness, heal old wounds and reflect on patterns that may not be helping them.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
