Specialties: marital & divorce issues (including co-parenting counseling) Grief related to life changes (including death), as well as relationship issues; Adoption support (group & individual).
"I prefer to think of my patients and myself as fellow travelers, a term that abolishes distinctions between 'them' (the afflicted) and 'us' (the healers). ... We are all in this together, and there is no therapist and no person immune to the inherent tragedies of existence." (Borrowed from Dr. Irvin Yalom). My practice makes possible the important work of self-evolution & growth in part due to my eclectic approach & focus on the unique matters of every individual. My lived experiences have greatly influenced my desire to partner with my fellow travelers as we do our 'work' and to do so intentionally and mindfully.

Everyone experiences trauma, but for some, those experiences can feel too big to handle alone. My name is Nico’Lee Biddle, and I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced complex trauma, depression, and anxiety. I have 10 years of experience working with individuals whose lives have been impacted by experiencing something beyond their control, such as foster care, parental substance abuse or mental health, and overall life transitions. I have an eclectic therapeutic approach where I use elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative and talk therapy, and trauma-focused therapy.

Trauma can create a feeling within us that others won't accept us, see us or feel what we feel. It can leave us feeling scared, alone and judged. Life stressors can develop creating a mountain that seems too big to climb. Trauma can create a space where you don't have the words to describe what your are feeling and experiencing. You don't have to have the answers. Therapy is a journey of discovery and an experience of acceptance and safety. Healing occurs when we recognize where we have been and create new paths for our lives. I accompany people on their journey towards healing.

Counseling is an opportunity to set aside time for yourself to learn how to use your strengths to overcome challenges, and meet your needs and wants. I have experience with client's who have gone through a variety of challenges including; trauma, depression, anxiety, life challenges/transitions, women's issues, parenting and relationship challenges. I also work with parents of children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder using Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE). Using this evidenced based framework I'm able to meet with parent(s) only with the result of reducing their child's (and therefore family's) anxiety.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
