I often use Expressive Arts Therapy to move beyond traditional talk therapy.
I believe we all possess innate strengths and have the potential to thrive and live meaningful lives; however, sometimes we get stuck. Major changes, life stage transitions, and stressors can become overwhelming, exceed the ability to cope, and prompt individuals, couples, and families to seek outside support. These times also hold potential for healing and growth. I use a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, attachment, and systems lens to view and explore issues impacting the person, couple, and family; and collaborate to explore possible solutions. I work with children, adolescents, and adults of all ages and in all life stages.

Soy una terapeuta bilingue y bicultural. I am a trauma therapist and specialize in working with first responders experiencing PTSD, depression and anxiety. These conditions may be causing distressing memories, irritability, a need to control things, anger, self-harming behaviors, suicidal thoughts, low motivation, and codependent tendencies. These wounds prevent you from forming strong, healthy connections with the people you love and get in the way of the life you desire.

I am here to remind you, you are not broken, even if your mind may be suggesting that you are. It is probable that these thoughts are connected to trauma—a way to make sense out of how uncomfortable you feel in your own body. Trauma can impact our health, body, emotions, relationships, perception of self and reality. Somatic Therapy may support you finding some relief in being you. Let's begin to explore and integrate what's causing this pain and psychological suffering without bypassing or minimizing your experiences. Your body has the wisdom to provide the answers. We may need to listen, honor and acknowledge its truth.

I know first hand that healing from trauma and "the dark nights of the soul" are not only possible, but hold within them a gateway to more love and joy. No one goes through life without pain. Yet how we address our pain will make all the difference in how deeply we suffer, how resilient we are and how much we grow from these experiences. I will infuse our collaboration with compassion, acceptance, curiosity, and humor--focusing on your strengths.

Making the choice to come to therapy is not an easy one. Therapy can be difficult and intimidating but ultimately has the potential to help you create positive and lasting change. I commonly work with clients who struggle with negative thoughts, depression, anxiety, trauma, attachment, self-harm, low self-esteem, identity, life transitions, difficult past/present life experiences, relationships, family conflict, and loss. My focus is on supporting you while we explore your situation, finding what tools work best and support your needs most, and using those tools to gently challenge and push past the barriers that currently exist.

Hi, I'd like to help if you're struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, school problems, or relationship problems. I'd like to be there for your family if your child or teen seems depressed, unfocused, angry, anxious, isolative or is struggling in school or friendships. If you are searching for tools to navigate problems at work, relationships, or thoughts that won't get out of your head, I can help. If you're in the LGBTQIA+ community and need an affirming therapist, I am one. I use humor and creativity to help people shift perspective.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
