As an Asian-American with extensive experience living overseas, I also specialize in issues related to intercultural issues, cross-cultural adjustment, burnout, identity formation, spirituality, and grief/loss.
Many of us appear to be functioning well in life, but in reality feel like imposters, often stressed and unsatisfied in our lives and relationships. I foster the discovery of genuine peace and fulfillment through "undoing aloneness," helping clients embrace their best and worst selves, and unearthing a more self-compassionate and authentic way of being. My clients are typically individuals, seeking treatment for anxiety, perfectionism, trauma, and a wide variety of relational issues.

Living in the Bay Area is both exhilarating and challenging. With the pressures and responsibilities of time, work, and family, you may encounter challenges to find the balance and much needed support for your emotional wellbeing. Are you experiencing work or relationship stress or have other worries or concerns? You do not have to navigate this alone. Friends and family are usually well meaning and can provide support, but there may be times when it is appropriate to consult a professional who can focus on YOUR needs and find solutions to the challenges you encounter.

With 22 years of experience of working with family upheaval, foster care and physical and sexual abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and domestic violence, I enjoy being present for those working on the above issues. Issues of loss and grief, parenting skills or a new life direction. In recent years, I have come to love working with families and siblings of children diagnosed with Autism. Many times these family members are left with no support in the day in and day out living with a child or sibling with Autism. Chronic pain is also a major interest of mine.

I have been in practice in Burlingame for over 25 years, specializing in couples' therapy and the treatment of individual adults having problems with depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. These issues can be the result of poor self-esteem, stress, trauma or abuse, grief and loss and difficulties with relationships. Some people are at higher risk for depression and anxiety because of their inherited biology as well as their learned patterns of thought and behavior. I work with my clients to understand their unique situation, to set goals and to provide treatment based on evidence from behavioral science research.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
