I also help clients enhance or build a mindfulness practice to help them identify intense emotions as early as possible in order to have more opportunities to utilize skillful behavior in challenging situations.
I work with clients to treat anxiety disorders, depression, and bipolar disorders, as well as increase their ability to regulate emotions and replace impulsive behaviors with effective ones. I also help clients to identify their own intrinsic strengths and values. The effect is an ongoing flow of positive experiences, which help to build confidence, boost self-respect, and improve interpersonal relationships. I offer clients positive regard, non-judgmental stance, and a compassionate environment, where they can feel safe expressing their experiences, thoughts and feelings.

I honor the unconscious component of psychological life and have integrated this information with concrete behavioral observations and goals - providing a powerful format for significant change.
I am an experienced psychotherapist with offices in both San Francisco and Berkeley. I provide therapy for adults and adolescents as my primary focus. I meet with individuals, couples, and families to help them overcome areas of emotional and relational difficulties. I have an active, open way of working and am curious, engaged, honest, and direct. I take people's need for change very seriously, and am an advocate for finding ways to help people live with greater depth, satisfaction, and choice. While this can involve diligence, resilience, and perseverance, play and creativity are also integral in the process.

I am trained in control-mastery, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
A good therapy session should feel emotional and immediate, yet grounded in the past so one can understand and feel old experiences in new ways. Sometimes there is laughter and sometimes there are tears. A good therapy session feels alive and satisfying.

I have specialized in Child, Adolescent, and Family psychotherapy since 2004 with an emphasis on Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Family Therapy.
Some people struggle for weeks, months, or even years before considering psychotherapy. And it makes sense — it's hard to confide in a stranger and can take a while to find the right fit. We want authenticity and experience in a therapist but also someone relatable and easy to talk with. When couples counseling, family therapy, or child/adolescent support is needed, the search may seem even more daunting. We need a clinician with the interpersonal skills, temperament, and adaptability to forge a meaningful connection with our partners, children, and the networks who support them.

I have had a psychotherapy practice since 1983, and conducted HIV behavioral research at UCSF 20 years.
Does your life today reflect your hopes and desired choices -- and satisfy your own needs? Or is the life you live defined by others' needs and expectations -- or by outdated expectations for yourself? To face life's challenges today and tomorrow requires greater self-awareness. If you wish to learn more about yourself, to not only come up with solutions to the problems you face today, but to have tools with which to meet the future, we can work together well. I can be of special help in working through relationship concerns, whether seen as a couple or as an individual.

I specialize in treating clients with clinical depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Past trauma often does not remain in the past, but too often spills over into the present. While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based approaches are valuable tools for change, I recognize the profound impact of relational dynamics on my clients’ mental health.

As a therapist, I am passionate about walking alongside folks as they reveal their truths and vulnerabilities to themselves. I believe, and have witnessed that people are capable of long standing change with knowledge, support, and connection, and that therapy is a great place for that. You can learn new ways to manage life stressors, feel safe, gain confidence, and live a more joyful and purposeful life. I use cognitive behavioral, solution-focused, and strength-based techniques, while never ignoring the human element and connection where the real change happens.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
