I work from an integrative, interpersonal therapy approach and other theoretical frameworks as it would be helpful to a client, and tailor my approach to them.
It can be difficult to reach out for mental health support. It can be even more difficult to find a therapist who is a good fit. I recognize this difficulty, and my goal is to make the therapeutic process as supportive and affirming for you as possible. I'm passionate about working with clients from diverse and marginalized backgrounds, especially individuals from LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. I am a licensed clinical psychologist (Psy.D.), and I specialize in multicultural psychology. I am trained in providing evidence-based treatment for anxiety, depression, mood changes, and other mental health difficulties.

The people I work with all have one thing in common: they want to feel better. They may come to me with a discrete crisis or a problem with work, family, or relationships. They may simply feel bad and want to talk with someone who can listen and understand. Whatever their concerns, they have the curiosity, courage and desire to feel better in order to achieve their personal goals .

If you're feeling anxious about the state of things these days and would like to talk, I am meeting with people remotely via phone and video. Therapy is a conversation in which you can discuss the most complex and sensitive subjects. Together we reach an understanding of what you're experiencing by sorting through your thoughts and feelings.

My focus is to develop a relationship with the client. This is called the two person model which is different than the old fashion practice where the doctor is one up and the client is one down. Rather, the two person model attempts to understand the client through questions and mutual discussion. I am not a silent therapist. I give feedback and remain fully engaged with the patient. Together we build a rapport. I adhere to a humanistic approach.

In my therapy practice, I focus on empowerment: the ability to move freely, think creatively, and speak truth courageously. If you feel disaffected and disillusioned by the pervasive injustice and exploitation in the world, you are not alone. I welcome your anger, your bitterness, your despair, and your grief. There is every temptation to numb, collapse, rage, and rationalize given the state of things, but I will support you as you move away from these habitual responses and seek meaning, purpose, connection, and joy.

Each individual or couple's suffering is unique. Despite significant success the sources of this suffering can elude and confuse you. Together, we can talk and think about your suffering and gradually you can develop the capacity for a sense of sturdiness and purpose. Thoughtfully examining your unique experiences in the presence of a warm, nonjudgmental therapist can allow you to discover new ways of relating to yourself and others and the flexibility to live your life differently. The power of talk therapy lies in getting to the heart of the matter, and the therapy relationship is a powerful venue for insight and transformation.

Are you feeling stuck or overwhelmed even though you want to make changes? Maybe you're at a crossroad trying to figure which direction to go? Together, let's locate where you are today so you can make intentional movement. Over the past decade, I've come to learn again and again there are legitimate reasons why we feel what we do, why we do what we do, and also why it's difficult to make changes we want make. When we really understand and acknowledge what is causing the discomfort (e.g. feeling stuck, sad, anxious, fearful), lasting change can occur. This process is unique for each person and I'd love to join you on your journey.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
