With over twenty years of experience in a practice focusing primarily on personal issues and improving relationships. For me, therapy is about providing a safe, non-judgmental space, free from social pressures and prejudices, and labels. I see therapy as a partnership and dialogue between the therapist and the patient, where together we tackle challenges and questions and think and work together to craft answers. I have different approaches according to the patient's necessities. I was trained in psychoanalysis, CBT, trauma focus, EFT, mindfulness, and attachment theory, among other therapeutic interventions.

Each of us may begin psychotherapy for different reasons; an immediate crisis or traumatic experience, painful symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, addictive behaviors, or grief. Exploring early life experiences and resolving trauma while addressing the here and now can help you be more engaged with others, make progress towards what you want in life, and experience more ease. Many individuals seek more existential but no less important questions of meaning, identity, sexuality, spirituality, philosophy, gender issues, psychology, politics, and power. All of these are excellent reasons for engaging in depth psychotherapy.

I approach psychotherapy from a whole-person perspective and I believe therapy, along with other practices, can help us awaken to a life of meaning. In therapy I will help you identify the source of your longing to be whole, and together, we will move closer to that source, so you become re-sourced. Together we will explore your innate natural cycles and help you align to your own rhythm, so that you might meet depletion with rest and energy with creativity.

Individuals often struggle with managing the stress in their lives which can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and unhealthy behaviors. Distress can arise from work, life transitions, relationships, and difficult emotions. We can find ourselves reacting in the same ways, experiencing the same agonizing feelings, and being in the same difficult circumstances. The goal is to understand your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, use that information to minimize suffering, have healthier relationships with others and yourself, achieve your life goals, and feel a sense of agency to live the life you deserve.

As an African American, I understand how important it is to have proper representation in the mental health field. Being able to have access to providers who look like you or share your cultural background can make all the difference in one's motivation for change. I'm a very direct clinician. I will serve the role of your accountability partner, where we cultivate a supportive, judgment-free zone together. I will be happy to help you navigate reasonable pathways to insight, growth, and positive change. But the steering wheel is always in your hands. If you're ready, then let's get going!

Being a human is hard! Managing relationships (familial, romantic, platonic, professional) with all kinds of different personalities, feeling comfortable and confident in our careers, finding healthy and lasting love, and feeling good about ourselves through it all can feel like an impossible task. We were never given a manual on how to do this! And while, as humans, we are incredibly resilient and have somehow found a way to get this far, some of the coping mechanisms we have developed throughout our lives may not be serving us anymore. I help clients gain insight into their thoughts & behaviors to help improve their outcomes.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
