Psychotherapy, from its Greek origin, means to tend or render service to the soul or life spirit. My goal is to assist you to find that quiet place within you, your soul or life spirit, where your healing begins. From this source, you have the opportunity to transform your life. Couples can learn to truly know and accept one another and take their relationship to a higher level. Many of my clients describe me as warm and intuitive and believe that I am able to get to the core of their issues in a relatively short time.

During the course of our lives we experience many joys and hardships, and along with them the full range of human emotions. Each moment and feeling is an opportunity to better understand self, other, and the world. Your painful feelings may be signals that old wounds need to be acknowledged or that your truth is not being lived fully. If you are currently struggling to cope with life challenges, feeling unfulfilled or seeking personal growth, the therapeutic relationship can provide an open and nonjudgmental atmosphere to explore the body and mind in a safe, comfortable space.

I became a licensed counselor in 2012. Prior to that I was mentored by some highly-trained LMFT’s in Utah. The spark for clinical work came in 2007 while working as a Case Manager at a Residential Treatment Center for teens in beautiful St George, Utah. I guess I was destined for the desert and never knew it. I’ve had two beautiful children since then— who are my world. I’ve worked in private practice, outpatient and inpatient at several phoenix hospitals, outpatient clinic, directed the Intake Department at Haven Behavioral Health Hospital, and managed mental health intake at the State Prison Complex in Phoenix.

My aim is to help you address problematic ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving by way of examining the ways in which you perceive the world around you. The goal is to assist you in reaching a position of appreciation for your genuine self (for you are the perfect you) and an acceptance of the events that occur in your life. I would be honored to take part in your journey of discovering the narratives which potentially distort reality and lead to discomfort, diminished self-worth, or other barriers to attaining contentment.

Hi, I’m Cynthia. Welcome to Desert Somatics & Psychotherapy. In this practice, I endeavor to create a safe, healing space for people to work with the most vulnerable parts of themselves. When you are facing anxiety, depression, burnout, overwhelm, grief and loss, or the residual effects of traumatic situations or experiences, it can feel insurmountable. My passion is helping people to take the big, scary events, feelings, thoughts, and life experiences they are facing and to break them down into manageable pieces we can work through together. In so doing, we find that healing and repair are possible.

Therapy is an investment in your growth. Life is challenging, sometimes we all need a little help. I offer a warm, empathetic and accepting approach. My goal is to help you along life’s journey through your ups and down. Further helping you navigate the various challenges that life throws. The creative approach in which I use, is to work to find your strengths and explore emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal concerns. Ultimately, I believe therapy should be a collaborative effort in working together to examine your goals, strengths, and resources in an effort to develop a renewed sense of identity.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
