Societal norms have influenced many of us to believe that it’s unacceptable to need help and that prioritizing yourself is a weakness. We place unrealistic expectations for who we should be and eventually it gets to be too much. As a therapist my goal is to help you change the narrative. Aiding you in developing self awareness and a strong sense of self love, and encouraging self care and self expression are key components in changing the narrative and breaking the cycle.

Spicy? Artsy? Neurodivergent? Hypermobile? Me too. Those on the fringe are my favorite kinds of people. Your emotions are intense. You see the best and worst in life. It can get hard though; the anxiety, rage, and sadness hurt. You get impulsive - say and do things you regret. You can be a hot mess. The emotional roller coaster is exhausting - you've been riding it all your life and want off. Familiar? The good news is it's gonna be ok. You're not "crazy". You don't have to live in misery. If you think you might have Borderline Personality Disorder, or are just a highly sensitive person, Dialectical Behavior Therapy can help.

Are you ready to be open? Open to change, to trying new things, to having new experiences and to having a healthy mind and body? Are you aware? Aware of how you talk to yourself, aware of the story you tell yourself and others about who you are? Are you ready to be focused on your present and not regretting the past or being anxious about the future? Are you ready to be engaged with the process of identifying who and what you value in life and make decisions that move you toward your values? You can do hard things and move towards those values even when it's difficult!

We all struggle to find balance in the roles we are trying to maintain in our lives. Our past, relationship struggles, motivation, anxiety and depression can all complicate our attempts to navigate how to be the best version of ourselves. Many of us "know" what to do, but have not successfully identified ways to manifest that into action. While we cannot change the things we have experienced, or the behavior of those around us, we can identify successful ways to approach our difficulties. A part of moving forward can be gaining more awareness of the mind/body connection and exploring insight and behaviors to make lasting change.

We all want to live a fulfilling, meaningful life. We want better relationships, strategies and hope. Sometimes we get trapped in the challenges, difficulties, and pain that comes our way. Coming to terms with a difficult past, present, or future takes courage and time. My role is to help you learn to improve your challenging situation or relieve the hurt you feel. It may be due to life transitions, hard relationships, pain from the past, chronic stress, or fear of future events that have you stuck. We will work together to develop a plan for the issues you want to improve in a realistic, attainable manner.

Sometimes looking in the mirror is hard when the image looking back at you is not what you pictured. Our past hurts and traumas, broken relationships, unhealthy relationship with food, and painful relationship with our bodies leave us broken and weary. I believe that digging into those painful places brings healing, as well as learning how to move into the present.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
