I specialize in the treatment of adolescent girls and adult women, many of whom have experienced sexual trauma, emotional abuse, and physical assault.
Healing begins when we talk about the pain - I believe one of the largest obstacles to feeling better is asking for help. I also believe that each of us is resilient and has an inner strength that enables us to soldier on while we work through our pain. My goal as your therapist will be to support you and give you the tools you need, while guiding you through the process of healing and resolution so that you may find inner peace and renewed energy.

Divorce, physical or sexual abuse and other traumas, attachment difficulties, and adoption issues are all areas in which I have extensive experience.
Relationships are central to my work, whether it be the relationship between a child or adult and myself, or the complex web of relationships within a family. My training and experience in Infant Mental Health--a type of therapy focusing on the attachment relationship between a primary caregiver and and an infant or young child--permeates all aspects of my work. I believe that therapy cannot separate an individual from the context of his or her relationships, past or present. I am creative and flexible in my approach to working with the children, teens, adults and families that I serve.

My areas of specialization include depression, anxiety, work and career problems, relationship issues, self-esteem issues, intimacy difficulties, trauma, loss and bereavement, divorce, parenting, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse.
You might feel anxious, or depressed. You want to change but you feel stuck, unable to move forward. You might be unhappy with aspects of yourself, or your relationships, but you do not know what to change, how to change. You might suffer because of trauma, or for a loss that feels too hard to bear. Talking to a therapist can help. If you decide to meet with me, my first goal will be to connect with you, and help you feel understood. Working from this connection, I will try to help you understand more of yourself, and know how to change using the therapeutic techniques most appropriate for your characteristics and needs.

individual therapy--marriage/couples therapy --- professors, college and graduate students ---sexual abuse --- gay/lesbian/queer community -- family of origin issues -- mood problems--personality patterns/dysfunctions .
It's hard being a person. We all struggle to some extent in fundamental areas of human life-- relationships, identity, work, destructive behaviors, the meaning of life itself. Satisfying marriage/committed relationships are a specific challenge faced by many. I work in both individual and couples therapy. There are many ways to approach human problems, including: how family of origin influences personality; one's relationship to one's thoughts and feelings; self-defeating beliefs, both conscious and unconscious; self-defeating behavior. I value thoughtfulness and compassion, working together, and recognizing your goals and ideas.

I’m a very passionate therapist that centers her work around being trauma informed and client centered. I provide individual psychotherapy to adults that have a range of complex issues such as trauma, depression, anxiety, stress management, identity and much more. I work with clients using an intersectional and social justice lens that has been developed over years of working with oppressed communities such as survivors on domestic and sexual violence. The strength-based approach I use, helps clients look within the blackness to find the light.

I love working with teenaged and college-aged clients, as well as men who want to discover how to be deeply alive in this modern world. I work with a variety of clients, and have particular training in the realm of sexuality. People who have been to counselors before tell me they’re relieved to find someone who actually listens instead of offering stock answers. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, I believe that rich, authentic conversations lead to discovery and transformation. I show up with curiosity and a readiness to discover who you are and what brings you alive. (Find more info at www.timcourtois.com)

As a therapist, I approach all of my work from a social justice framework. I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those struggling with chronic illness or dynamic disabilities. I work with clients to set realistic, attainable goals for treatment. I aim for transparency in everything that I do. I particularly enjoy supporting women, members of the LGBTQ community and clients from other marginalized groups. I am culturally Deaf and fluent in ASL, and as such, I serve many Deaf clients. However, spoken English is my native language, so many of my clients are also hearing.

It is written, "Hope is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." A popular image of an anchor symbolizes safety and stability. Many people - maybe even you - face terrible storms in their lives: addiction, abuse, fear, loss of relationships, joblessness, loneliness and more. In response to life's storms, people turn to compulsive sexual behavior, anger, substance abuse and food to soothe themselves. These "medications" not only do not work, but create chaos in our lives. Other ways of dealing with turmoil include lying, isolation and feelings of shame, guilt and worthlessness. I offer a refuge to chart a new course.

We deserve joy and fulfillment in our lives and at times it is hard to reach. Sometimes we need to access deeper parts of ourselves to heal traumatic experiences. This is why I often use experiential therapies in my practice. These are therapies that focus on the way it feels to experience your emotions, not just think about them. When we talk about tough topics, we may focus on what your body feels like, what memories or images come to mind, or how old it makes you feel. We can do this through imagination, movement, or art.

I take a collaborative, holistic, and relational approach to therapy that allows for the client to be the expert in their own experience. I try to create a non-judgmental space for clients to process and contextualize their experiences within the systems, relationships and positions in which we operate. I tend to be emotionally-focused and person-centered, meaning therapy will be a dynamic space that feels most aligned with what you may need or want on any given day.

The individuals, couples, and families with whom I work are interested in understanding and addressing not only certain specific emergent problems such as those associated with adjustment and relationship difficulties, depression, and anxiety, but also the underlying thoughts, feelings, and behavioral and relational patterns that have contributed to the development of these problems. Through a collaborative, empathic, psychotherapeutic process, these individuals, couples, and families expand and utilize their skills, strengths, and self-understanding in order to live more meaningful and rewarding lives.

I provide EMDR for healthcare providers, first responders and helping professionals. You work hard, but painful experiences from your past keep you stuck. Perhaps you over-schedule, over-commit, and always keep yourself busy. You listen to podcasts about stress and time management, but have a hard time relaxing because your brain won’t shut off. Or you haven’t slept well in ages, and you never feel rested. Maybe you can’t stop thinking about an incident or situation, or maybe you overreact to certain people and situations or feel jumpy and panicky. You know that you have so much more potential and are ready work to feel better now.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
