I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy which is a proven treatment for trauma that goes beyond talk therapy.
You’ve been through a traumatic experience and you haven’t been functioning the same since then. You see yourself struggling more and more in your relationships, at your job, and in your day-to-day life. You feel alone. You’re scared that you might feel this way forever. You’re even more scared that things might get worse. You want to feel happy again, and you want to break free from the cycle you find yourself in over and over again. If this sounds familiar, I can tell you that you can heal from your trauma and the difficult experiences that you have gone through.

Heymen provides Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) for individuals who have experienced trauma.
After working with patients for over 30 years, I have come to believe that setting clear therapeutic goals and establishing a working partnership of trust and commitment are keys to success. My aim is to balance acceptance, compassion, and validation with the need to make sustainable changes. Learning self-regulation and life skills are priorities. Developing effective action plans in a safe and non-judgmental environment also facilitate positive outcomes. I look for every opportunity to collaborate with other providers if my patients request this and are seeking a team approach.

Waitlist for new clients
I've helped clients with issues such as depression, trauma, relationships, adjustment, Aspergers, grief, career, emotional disturbances, abuse, sexual orientation, faith, self-exploration, anxiety, and crisis during study abroad.
Sometimes we all can use a little help on life's journey--when things seem dark, when we feel like we are drowning in emotions, challenges, or thoughts, or when we just need someone to help with focus as we set a course toward achieving our goals. That is what therapy is all about! Therapy is not having someone with all the right answers tell you what to do or doing things to you; it is having a professional guide to draw out your goals and strengths, to breathe hope into difficult times, and to assist with perspective and skills. As Rumi said, "The wound is where the light enters you." Come, find hope, and refuel for your journey.

I do my best work supporting people who have histories of childhood and shock trauma, anxiety, eating problems, grief, chronic health issues, perfectionism and codependency.
Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed, depressed or disconnected and wanting to make lasting change in your life and relationships? Feel like you have tried everything you know to do? Still nothing seems to work and you just want to feel better. I believe that many symptoms and problems are actually survival strategies that emerge from our need to cope with the hardships of life. These could be depression, shame, perfectionism and fear of rejection to name a few. My passion is helping people identify and understand their survival strategies and create new patterns that improve their lives and connection to self and others.

I know getting started can be hard. My goal is to help you feel as comfortable as possible so we can go at your pace. I specialize in working with clients with anxiety, ADHD, and trauma. Many of my clients have tried to cope with their situations by pushing their feelings away or using addictive behaviors to numb them. My job is to help people listen to and manage their emotions without feeling overwhelmed or ruled by them. Being personally in recovery from alcohol helps me understand and empathize with what you’re going through because I’ve probably been there too.

My approach to therapy is rooted in the view that we are all, at the deepest level, whole and complete; we all have wisdom, love, compassion, and the capacity for connection within us. I work with adults and older teens seeking assistance with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, and identity development and change.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
