I help clients address internal obstacles that may affect work, intimate relationships, and creative endeavors as well as specific psychiatric problems such as anxiety disorders and affective conditions including depression, and bipolar disorders.
I am a practicing clinician of over 20 years offering psychodynamic and cognitive-behavior psychotherapy to adults. CBT focuses on the development of concrete problem-solving techniques and is often ideal for problems that are highly acute and/or relatively circumscribed. Psychodynamic therapy examines emotional conflicts in relation to broader aspects of one's personality and life history. Its objective is to help individuals identify and overcome fears which may be unconscious and sometimes counter-intuitive. I also sometimes borrow concepts from meditation as well as sports psychology.

I regularly publish on trauma and bipolar disorder, so these are areas of particular speciality.
Hi, I'm Stephanie. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist in NY, NJ, CT, GA, and FL, and an adjunct professor at the Emory School of Medicine. I strive to provide a warm and safe space where patients can feel comfortable sharing without fear of judgment. My goal is to help my patients reflect on their values so that they can work towards what it means to be their "best self." I will always focus on treating the symptoms and not the "disorder," in an effort to tailor my approach to the individual. I am passionate about fighting stigma associated with mental illness and engage in advocacy and research outside of treating patients.

I approach therapy from the perspective that healing comes through the caring and dynamic engagement created between two people. Our time together will be a collaboration that encourages mutual presence, relatedness and commitment. Research confirms the importance of this. While no specific technique is consistently effective in eliciting change, certain therapists who bring a particular quality to their work often are. I believe I am such a therapist and my clients consistently report feeling met, nurtured, and empowered by the work we do together.

Sexual problems are difficult to talk about for most people and can cause great distress. Sex therapy is designed to put people at ease so that they can feel as comfortable as possible talking about these problems and to find practical solutions. Some of the typical problems I work with include specific sexual dysfunctions (e.g., premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, difficulties with orgasm) and more general problems such as lack of sexual desire, sexual orientation and gender issues, unusual sexual behaviors, shyness and social inhibition.

The struggles of day to day can sometimes leave us feeling exhausted in navigating life’s challenges. In therapy we develop the ability to better tolerate the difficult and uncomfortable emotions and feelings. We build skills and tools to practice when those moments happen, creating a full and authentic life.

I work with clients to create the conditions for greater self-acceptance, ease, and self-agency. I often work with creative or sensitive people, and with those recovering from complex trauma, addiction, and family-of-origin wounds that may cause depression, stuckness, or disconnection. I believe in the liberating process of creating space for grief, sorrow, anger, humor and joy as a means to support growth, healing, and change. I work with clients in a highly experiential way, honoring the wisdom of the body and language of the soul. I believe that building and creating one's life is more powerful than attempting to "fix" oneself.

Are you struggling with loneliness? A lot of people I work with feel emotionally lonely, socially disconnected, and exhausted. They are often high-achieving perfectionists, who may appear to be doing great but, on the inside, they feel a deeper sense of despair. They believe or have been told they are “too much” or fear burdening others. This can manifest in disordered patterns of eating, compulsive exercise, and attending engagements out of obligation instead of enjoyment. Radically Open (RO) DBT, a new evidenced based treatment that targets emotional loneliness, teaches skills to increase flexibility and openness.

Sometimes the most overwhelming step can be the first one: Finding a therapist who feels like a good fit for you. I aim to create a safe, warm environment for you to come and unpack the content of your life—your past, your current struggles, and your thoughts about how to design the future you want for yourself. With the freedom to speak candidly about issues that are causing you distress comes the power to start making change.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
