I believe that this vital skill is not practiced or talked about enough, yet it holds immense value in our personal and interpersonal lives.
As a therapist, my ideal client is genuinely interested in learning about their emotional needs. I greatly value individuals willing to put in consistent effort, especially during the most challenging moments of their self-discovery. I appreciate clients who are open and transparent about their experiences and struggles, as it enables me to provide them with the best support and guidance possible. I truly enjoy the process of helping clients work on becoming more self-aware and learning how to cope effectively.

I utilize interventions such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Interpersonal Family Systems (IFS), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
It is no secret that life can test us at any given moment. One minute we can be living our best lives and the next we can be dealing with a challenge we thought we would never have to face. As humans, during times of anguish and heartache, we tend to focus on the negatives instead of the positives. Questions like, “why is this happening to me?”, “is this ever going to get better?”, and “why is it always one thing after another?” tend to fill our minds, making it seem impossible to be happy again. My goal as your therapist is to ensure you get back to living your best life!

My emphasis is on steering my clients/patients to move beyond clinical symptom-reduction to a general emphasis on building core self-worth and courage, as well as gaining appreciation for one's personal strengths and gifts. My therapeutic style blends compassion and support with a big "dose" of directive challenging on a sensitively timed basis. I look forward to working with you if you want to get started.

Here are two things I think are important about therapy: 1) People can find relief for symptoms like worry, loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, and craving; and 2) People can build psychological strength. Psychological strength allows people to have more fulfilling relationships, use their capacities more effectively, and bring more flexibility and creativity to problems in living.

Hello, I'm Michelle Bonilla, a licensed professional counselor with extensive experience across various clinical settings, including inpatient detoxification units and outpatient substance use disorder treatment programs. Are you constantly overwhelmed by anxiety and worry, despite your efforts to manage them? Does your depression leave you feeling stagnant, unsatisfied, and discontented? Perhaps you're weary of incessant overthinking or the weight of numerous responsibilities. Maybe you're frustrated with feelings of isolation or a lack of motivation. It's possible you can't recall a time when things weren't this challenging.

I have worked with a variety of mental, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. I have helped many children, adolescents, and adults overcome obstacles in their lives and achieve their goals in life. I believe that change is possible if you are willing to commit to therapy and make different choices. By improving your judgment and gaining insight into dysfunctional behaviors and thought patterns, you can make positive changes and reach your goals.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and families. Parents have questions about what they, and their child, are going through. I am able to provide answers through psychoeducation and years of experience. Children with behavior issues in school or at home or adolescents with new behaviors and problems with grades or social issues. These are the families I get to help through very stressful times. Improving the quality and functioning of individuals and families through improved communication, learning parenting techniques, advocacy, and providing CBT to help with anxiety, depression, and/or behavior and educational problems.

My ideal client is curious about themselves and the world and actively participates in the therapeutic process. I enjoy working with young adults and older adults, but I'm not limited to these populations. My ideal client is at a place of feeling "stuck" in their life. Whether that be a career transition, deciding on a college major, feeling lost in a relationship, or a new onset of symptoms. I am also comfortable with helping individuals unpack their past to understand their current habits. My ideal client wants to understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to develop self-awareness and self-compassion along the way.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
