I work with adults, teen-agers and older children and understand the developmental tasks and challenges we face at each stage of our life.
I enjoy working with people who want to have a richer and more satisfying life and are willing to take emotional risks in order to be happier. I recognize how easily we can become stuck in old habits of thought and behavior that limit our lives. Therapy is a wonderful process for change. You can expect from me respect, an ability to deeply understand you, and the experience and knowledge to help you change the things in your life that are causing you problems. I'm trained in psychodynamic, Gestalt, EMDR, family systems, cognitive behavioral, marital and art therapies.

While my approach may vary depending on who my client is, my goals remain constant: to help the child, teen, parent(s) or individual adult reduce anxiety, improve communication and find increased joy in themselves, in their activities, and in the significant others in their lives.
As a child/adolescent therapist and parent-child specialist, I know that parenting will always have its challenges and that a certain amount of stress is inevitable, even under the best of circumstances. However, this current pandemic, with its consequent uncertainties and increased challenges and stresses on families, is unprecedented. If you are a parent who is having difficulties or are the parent of a young child, teen or young adult who is having difficulties, talking to a professional can be helpful.

Utilizing a blend of evidence-based solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral and family systems interventions, I will work collaboratively with you and possibly other important people in your life to identify your unique goals and develop a treatment plan to address your needs.

Parents: Do you ever feel everything you say and do is wrong? Struggle with unpredictable moods in your teenager? Sometimes just a small adjustment can influence greater ease in everyday interactions.
The evolving challenges of raising children involve the addition of new technology and an ever-increasing pressure to succeed. Keeping on top of these dynamics can at best overwhelm and at worst alienate those in even the most healthy families. Teens pass through a stage of fluctuating hormonal levels, while negotiating burgeoning independence, and navigating the waters of social media along with peer pressure. Meanwhile parents are dealing with keeping a household afloat, managing the family and their careers, while often having aging parents and/or dealing with grief over their loss. When teens and parents need a little help or mental health challenges require more effort for daily living than they should, learning new coping skills with or without medication can make a difference. Discovering what influences behaviors and learning ways to express what needs to be said can empower parents and their children to find more happiness and fulfillment in life. Sorting through these challenges and developing coping techniques that help organize and balance communication is my goal with all families and individuals.

I specialize in: •Substance Abuse •Grief and Loss •Divorce •Communication Skills •Depression •Anxiety •Inter-personal Relationships •Family Dynamics •Marriage Counseling •Adolescent Needs .
Creating change is difficult and takes effort. A person cannot be happy and content with their relationships with others, without first being happy and content with themselves. By looking at yourself, where you have been, where you are now and how you use what you have been given, whether environmental or biological, you can understand the changes in your behavior that are necessary to function in this world at an optimal level. A level where you feel good about yourself and enjoy healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
