We all experience challenges during our everyday lives. Sometimes these challenges can seem overwhelming and discouraging. I work with people who want to make changes in their lives to help themselves overcome these difficult experiences. These changes can often be difficult to contemplate, yet alone act on. I strive to create a supportive environment for my clients where they can explore their concerns and the emotions that arise.

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Please note that I am currently at capacity and unable to accept new patients at this time. There is wisdom in the ways we adapt to our environments, but they do not always serve us in the present moment. My aim is to help people identify their adaptive patterns and view them with compassion, while also learning what to hold and what to let go. As a neurobiological informed therapist, I aim to help people move from judgement, shame and isolation to curiosity, acceptance and connection.

I utilize a combination of therapeutic techniques that draw on Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Narrative therapy.
I am a social worker who has been in the human services field for over 10 years. I have experience working with adults who have a history of trauma, homelessness, criminal justice involvement, and substance use disorder. I believe in creating a non-judgmental environment where people can tell their story and collaborate with me as a clinician to identify the changes they would like to make in their lives.

I wholly believe we all have capacity for growth, regardless of where we begin. Life is fluid and people are not diagnostic labels, contrary to what social media would tell you. People are much more complex than a handful of symptoms on a Tik Tok video. Because of this, I utilize an integrative model in my work, incorporating different therapeutic styles depending on the client and the circumstances. My basic approach is psychodynamic in nature - helping you to understand what has happened in your life so you can better see the patterns that are no longer serving you, and identifying actions with you to change them.

Life can be so difficult at times. With so much going on in the world around and often within us it’s all too easy to lose your balance, feel lost and isolated. You may be experiencing increased feelings of anxiety, depression, fear or anger and resentment. Relationship conflicts may intensify or reinforce past traumas. As a professional with over 20 years of practice treating trauma and other mental health conditions, I can provide the guidance and support to help you make the changes you need to move beyond this challenging period of your life, toward something that feels more authentic and true for you.

I am currently taking new clients for bi-weekly or monthly appointments. Often times life can feel like a swamp, a bog of chaos where all your energy is focused on just trying to keep your head above water. If you are tired of treading the swamp and are ready to start swimming through it, I would be honored to partner with you in your therapeutic journey. If you are a therapist looking for a therapist, please know I have experience with this population.

Tired of having the same arguments over and over? Wondering why you seem to be stuck in cycles with your partner, friends, colleagues or yourself? How often do you find yourself wondering, "what happened to that sweet loving person I fell in love with? How did Godzilla end up in my bed? Or worse yet, is that Medusa staring back at me in the mirror"? OK then.....welcome. I'm Joni Altshuler and after 30yrs in practice, I continue to be inspired and often awe struck by the people who walk thru my door.

I specialize in adults and professionals. Life challenges everyone and sometimes we feel stuck. Stuck in sadness, worry, or doubt. Trapped in challenging relationship patterns, old habits or overwhelming stress. I can support you in getting unstuck - overcoming loss, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship and family challenges, career difficulties, transitions and burnout. We sometimes struggle to find meaning and purpose in our work and personal lives. We sometimes feel broken, different or like we’re not enough. I can help you reconnect to what matters to you, what you love about life, and find a way forward.

If I were looking for a therapist; I'd be hunting for the person that would listen & reflect on what they heard; offer advice that aligned with the problems presented, and challenge me to expand my perspective. I would want them to respect my beliefs and values; and provide authentic, life-giving examples to apply to my situation - using layman's terms and not their medical terminology vocabulary; but through their heart. Lastly, they would have to be funny and make me laugh through my pain. If that's you, reach out to me and we'll chat to determine if we align and could work well together!

We all struggle at times to meet the internal and external challenges inherent in life. We move to manage and cope with problems, unhappiness and bad feelings. Sometimes we get stuck. Other times we move with skill and thoughtfulness, realizing happiness and peace of mind. I work with people to maximize skillfulness and minimize being stuck, using principles of change found in various psychotherapy models. I emphasize accurate understanding, acceptance, and change based on your values and worldview. I am honored that clients share their struggles and successes with me!

Entering therapy is a courageous act to stop running and start being.
I am not accepting new clients at this time, I am supervising a clinical intern with openings. There is a way through. You don’t have to keep running from the present, sitting in the past or fixating on the future. You can be here now. Our work together can help orient the change process so that it is aligned with your values. I have been working with women, couples and families for the past decade. I bring authenticity, integrity and passion to the therapeutic relationship. It is possible to move from trauma, attachment wounds, addiction, disordered eating and anxiety towards resiliency, compassion, connection, hope and healing.

I enjoy working with people who find themselves at a fork in the road; at that place in life where they are ready to act or think differently or find themselves struggling to function when life becomes different. I have a passion for supporting cancer survivors and their families throughout the many stages of treatment including diagnosis, treatment, recovery, survivorship and grief. I also have spent a great deal of my career working with neurodivergent folks navigating the unique challenges of functioning in a neurotypical world. If any of this resonates with you, we may be a good fit.

Profile is up to date as of 3/19/24. I believe that people's emotional health is based upon a variety of factors including their biological make-up, the environment, relationships, and events from their upbringing. People develop beliefs to make their way in the world, and apply these beliefs as they function in their present day to day lives. Problems may result when beliefs that were once useful no longer make sense. Through therapy, it is my job to help people bring these beliefs into consciousness, so that they may then be modified to better fit the present.

My philosophy is to "keep it simple". Because those who are in need of counseling are often so overwhelmed, I feel it is important to keep the therapeutic process streamlined and noncomplicated. I have an eclectic approach to therapy and create a unique treatment plan to address each of your identified needs and goals in a simplified yet supportive and flexible manner that feels manageable.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
