I am licensed in NJ, NY, MA, & NH who can assess biochemistry to identify important abnormalities that may be related to mental health symptoms. I can provide genetic testing for med management. Patients often seek integrative psychiatry after they have trialed multiple medications, experienced unpleasant/unremitting side effects, and have not been able to obtain symptom alleviation with traditional psychiatry. I believe strongly in psychotherapy to help patients work towards healing their minds and bodies. I work collaboratively with other treatment providers and am a strong advocate for my patients needs.

I teach a weekly course on psychotherapy for anxiety to psychiatrists-in-training at Harvard Medical School, and use techniques from CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, mindfulness and hypnosis.
My approach focuses on helping my patients to thrive on challenge. When we view challenges as opportunities, we experience adrenaline as excitement, and we grow; when we view challenges as threats, we experience adrenaline as anxiety. This means that anxiety is simply growth waiting to happen. I show my patients how to overcome worry and distractions by welcoming adrenaline and using it to work at their best. You can learn more about my approach at www.optimalwork.com.

Therapy may include mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Approaches.
Are you having a difficult time navigating uncertainty? Maybe you are struggling to carry an ever-expanding mental load? Work, family and social obligations may feel more taxing than rejuvenating. Maybe you once enjoyed certain things that now feel out of reach to you? Sound like you? I often hear from people that they feel like they are just surviving and not thriving. Taking a step to start going to therapy or to consider taking medication is se and you deserve to feel better. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner and therapist, I have helped many individuals over the past two decades on their healing and wellness journeys.

You’ve tried everything: therapy, mindfulness, lifestyle changes, but are still struggling.
Every person is an individual with their own unique thoughts, feelings and traits—you are much more than just the broad label of a disorder. I provide individualized treatment: as no two patients are the same, no two treatments can be either.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Psychiatrists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
