Barnes draws on traditional talk therapy, mindfulness and philosophical perspectives, and modern neuroscience to help people develop insight, emotional freedom, self-acceptance, and behavioral change.
Dr. Barnes provides scientifically backed therapy techniques and closely follows evidenced-based treatments. He recognizes, however, that the most evidenced-based factor impacting psychotherapy outcomes is the quality of the relationship between the provider and client. Therefore, he strives to create an authentic and emotionally vivid relationship.

Many of the people I work with are children, adolescents, young adults, and families seeking a clearer understanding of emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges that have become difficult to navigate alone. Some are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, concentration difficulties, or school-related concerns. Others have tried therapy, medication, or both and still feel stuck. Together, we work to better understand what is contributing to these difficulties and develop a thoughtful, individualized plan that supports meaningful and lasting change.

In addition to more traditional therapeutic practices, medication management and psychoeducation regarding lifestyle changes, I incorporate an integrative blend of modalities; incorporating concepts of radical acceptance, mindfulness, somatic based practices and a humanistic framework into our therapeutic work
Calling in those grieving and those moving through profound change, upheaval, and transition. Those navigating the hormonal intensity of the luteal phase or perimenopause. The introverts, the anxious, and the highly sensitive. The recovering perfectionists, the high-functioning, and the burnt out. Mothers and caregivers. Those learning to love themselves more fully and make peace with their bodies. You don’t have to hold it all alone. I offer a warm, grounded space where you can feel supported, understood, and gently guided toward greater ease, self-trust, and connection to yourself.

I teach a weekly course on psychotherapy for anxiety to psychiatrists-in-training at Harvard Medical School, and use techniques from CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, mindfulness and hypnosis.
My approach focuses on helping my patients to thrive on challenge. When we view challenges as opportunities, we experience adrenaline as excitement, and we grow; when we view challenges as threats, we experience adrenaline as anxiety. This means that anxiety is simply growth waiting to happen. I show my patients how to overcome worry and distractions by welcoming adrenaline and using it to work at their best. You can learn more about my approach at www.optimalwork.com.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Psychiatrists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
