When things are challenging, asking for help can be one of the hardest yet bravest things you can do. I'm Jenny and my role is to make the process as easy as possible for you, by offering a warm and supportive environment from which you can explore the challenges that you are facing, the symptoms that you are struggling with, and the causes of these issues. Anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, depression, habits or fears do not define you; they can be temporary problems that you can learn to solve, with the right support in place. My approach to therapy allows you to find a way forward as quickly as possible.

Perhaps you're feeling anxious or depressed and you know you're not you, but need some help finding out why and how to move forward. It could be a work issue, difficulties in a relationship or a lack of confidence or self-esteem. Today's world can be a stressful place to live. The Pandemic, Cost of living and Climate Crisies, may all be having an effect on your mental health. The good news is, you've taken the first and often most difficult step; looking for help.

The last few years have been a real strain for many people. Perhaps you don't feel right, your relationships might be suffering, you may feel exhausted from trying to maintain a positive side. Maybe you keep doing the same things over and over but cannot seem to break the cycle. I believe we all have the capacity to help ourselves through much of this but, in an increasingly complex and busy life where we are ‘always on’, there often feels like there's little time available to focus on 'me'. Counselling gives you the valuable space and time to find your way in a supported and non-judgmental environment.

By building resilience and inspiring hope, I can work with you to overcome the difficulties that are causing your emotional & mental suffering. I will support you as you begin to live a more fulfilled & contented life. Life can be messy & rarely turns out just the way we’d hoped or planned & shame can be a common theme associated with low self-esteem but we can reduce its impact. Do you feel ‘stuck’ in life, in a relationship or in your work life? Maybe you have been signed off from work, college or university with anxiety or stress. Perhaps feeling low or anxious is preventing you from enjoying the ‘sunshine‘ moments of your life.

"There is a crack in everything - that's how the light gets in" (Leonard Cohen). I love this. We all have problems, things we don't like about ourselves, things we struggle with over and over. It's part of being human, none of us are completely 'sorted'. But sometimes we feel overwhelmed, desperate, alone.... the cracks are too big, the light isn't getting in. Or we feel stuck, frustrated, exhausted, going round in circles, nothing will ever change. Perhaps you feel you can't be the real you. Maybe you feel like this a lot, or maybe it's new for you and your usual coping/support isn't working. Maybe you don't know what's wrong.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
